Story
Mercy Fontenot was a Zelig who grew up in the San Francisco Haight-Ashbury scene, where she crossed paths with Charles Manson, went to the first Acid Test, and was friends with Jimi Hendrix. She predicted the Altamont disaster when reading the Rolling Stones' tarot cards at a party and left San Francisco for the climes of Los Angeles in 1967 when the Haight "lost its magic". Written just prior to her death in 2020, Permanent Damage shows us the world of the 1960s and 1970s music scene through Mercy's eyes, as well as the fallout of that era.

Story
An electric, searing memoir by the original rebel girl and legendary frontwoman of Bikini Kill and Kathleen Hanna’s rallying cry to feminists echoed far and wide through the punk scene of the 1980s, ’90s, and beyond. Her band, Bikini Kill, embodies this iconic time, and today their gutsy, radical lyrics of anthems like ‘Rebel Girl’ and ‘Double Dare Ya’ are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from?

Story
Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Sesali Bowen learned early on how to hustle, stay on her toes, and champion other Black women and femmes as she navigated Blackness, queerness, fatness, friendship, poverty, sex work, and self-love. Her love of trap music led her to the top of hip-hop journalism. But despite all the beauty, complexity, and general badassery she saw, Bowen found none of that nuance represented in mainstream feminism. Thus, she coined Trap Feminism, a contemporary framework that interrogates where feminism meets today's hip-hop.

Story
In 1983, backstage at the Lyceum in London, Tracey Thorn and Lindy Morrison first met. Tracey's music career with the Marine Girls had just begun, while Lindy, drummer for The Go-Betweens, was ten years her senior. They became confidantes, comrades and best friends, a relationship cemented by activism and agitprop theatre, lesbian punk bands and rock 'n' roll love affairs. Morrison came to be a kind of mentor to Thorn, a strong female role model in a male dominated industry. They both faced a chauvinist music media wanting them to behave to type.

Story
At seven years old, Min Kym was a prodigy, the youngest ever pupil at the Purcell School of Music. At 11 she won her first international prize. She worked with many violins, waiting for the day she would play 'the one'. At 21 she found it: a rare 1696 Stradivarius, perfectly suited to her build and temperament. Her career soared. She recorded the Brahms concerto, and a world tour was planned. Then, in a train station café, her violin was stolen. In an instant her world collapsed. She descended into a terrifying limbo land, unable to play another note.

What Would the Spice Girls Do?
- How the Girl Power Generation Grew Up

Story
The Spice Girls gave a generation their first glimpse of the power of friendship, of staying true to yourself, of sheer bloody-mindedness. And the girl power generation went on to kick-start a new conversation around gender equality. We may have grown up asking What Would the Spice Girls Do?, but their particular brand of feminism is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago - we still need that fun and fearlessness, we still need accessible and all-embracing equality...we still need a zig-a-zig-ah.

Story
Sure, here's a 2000-word celebration of The Rolling Stones' "Some Girls" album in the style of Kurt Loder: Alright, let's talk about "Some Girls," the album that proved The Rolling Stones weren't just your dad's rock band anymore. It's 1978, disco's doing its thing, punk's screaming in the corners, and here come Mick and the boys with a record that says, "Hey, we can do that too, and we'll do it better." Now, I've seen my fair share of Stones gigs, watched Mick strut his stuff from New York to L.A., but "Some Girls" hit different. This wasn't just another Stones record; this was a fucking ...

Story
Were you a misfit who followed your dreams to New York City back in the twentieth century when Manhattan rents were cheap and crime and creativity were rampant? Maybe you just imagined what it would be like. Based on her memoir, Girl To City follows singer-songwriter Amy Rigby's progression from Elton John fan in the Pittsburgh suburbs to late 70's Manhattan art student; from punk show habitué to fledgling musician to cult artist who caused a sensation with her album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. Each Wednesday, Amy will read a chapter and throw in some music.

Story
By 22 years old, Aaliyah had already accomplished a staggering amount: hit records, acclaimed acting roles, and fame that was just about to cross over into superstardom. Like her song, she was already “more than a woman” but her shocking death in a plane crash prevented her from fully growing into one.
