Sie werden in einem der Dörfer, die den See umgeben, aufgenommen und entdecken schnell, dass dort etwas nicht stimmt. Jede Woche wird dem finsteren Herrn des Sees ein Mensch geopfert. Und dabei können Matt und Aruula nicht tatenlos zusehen.

Maddrax hat herausgefunden, dass einer seiner ehemaligen U.S.Airforce-Kameraden unterwegs nach Norden ist. Auf dem Weg dorthin treffen er und die Barbarin Aruula auf einen Jungen, der gerade von einer Horde Affenmenschen angegriffen wird. Sie retten ihn vor seinen Peinigern und erfahren, dass die Sippe des Jungen bedroht und verfolgt wird. Und das können die beiden nicht hinnehmen.

Aruula macht sich große Sorgen, denn sie bemerkt bei Matt Drax große Veränderungen. Er steht unter dem mentalen Einfluss der Affenmenschen, reagiert zunehmend irrationaler und primitiver. Aruula erkennt, dass Maddrax in großer Gefahr schwebt.

Jede Woche fordert der Gott des Schweizer Binnensees Lac Leman ein Opfer. Matt und Aruula haben herausgefunden, dass es sich bei diesem Gott um ein Riesenkrokodil handelt, das durch die Substanzen eines leck geschlagenen unterseeischen Genforschungslabors mutierte. Matt verbündet sich mit den Gegnern des Opferkults und versucht, das Ungeheuer zu bezwingen.
