"La Bella Durmiente del Bosque" de Charles Perrault es un cuento de hadas clásico que cuenta la historia de una bella princesa condenada a dormir durante cien años. Después de ser pinchada con un huso en su decimoquinto cumpleaños, la princesa y todo su reino caen en un sueño profundo. Publicados en 1697 en Francia con el título de Les Contes de ma mère l'Oye, los ocho relatos incluidos en este libro han sido objeto de incontables versiones y adaptaciones, además de haber sufrido numerosas oleadas de censura en función de la cambiante pacatería del momento. El resultado, recortado y desvirtuado, es un somnífero para niños pequeños, que ha empalagado a generaciones de lectores adultos y traicionado, en la letra y en el espíritu, a la pluma del maravilloso Charles Perrault (Francia 1628-1703), maestro del misterio y el humor negro.

Charles Perrault nació en París el 12 enero de 1628, junto a su hermano gemelo, en el seno de una familia perteneciente a la alta burguesía. Participó en la creación de la Academia de las Ciencias y en la restauración de la Academia de Pintura. Desde 1663, fue secretario de la Academia Francesa. Escribió cuarenta y seis obras, aunque es el género de los Cuentos de hadas, el que lo consagra como escritor.

Op een avond komt een fee langs, en gebruikt haar magie om Assepoesters droom om naar een bal te gaan en een prins te ontmoeten, waar te maken. Maar, ze vraagt zich af of de magische avond langer zal duren dan de nacht van de bal.

De familie van Belle is door allerlei ellende aan lager wal geraakt. Als Belle's vader op reis moet in de hoop iets te redden van het familiefortuin, verdwaalt hij. Hij komt terecht in een vreemd kasteel, waar hij gastvrij onthaald wordt, maar nergens ziet hij een gastheer of personeel. Wanneer hij door de kasteeltuin loopt, ziet hij de prachtige rozen, en plukt er eentje voor zijn dochter, Belle. Hierop verschijnt een woest beest ten tonele, dat hem verwijt dat hij na alle gastvrijheid zijn rozen wil stelen en hem dreigt te verscheuren.

Lang geleden leefde er eens een houthakker die een vrouw had en zeven zonen. De houthakker werkte elke dag zo hard hij kon in het bos, maar helaas, hij slaagde er bijna nooit in zoveel te verdienen dat hij zichzelf en zijn gezin genoeg te eten kon geven. Vooral voor het jongste zoontje was dat heel erg, want die was toch al klein en zwak. En toen hij werd geboren, was hij maar net zo groot als de duim van zijn vader. Daarom werd hij ook Klein Duimpje genoemd.
