Newlyweds Margaret and Patrick decide to spend a year in Kenya. Patrick practices medicine while Margaret works as a photojournalist. Then a British couple invite them on a climbing expedition to the summit of Mount Kenya. During their ascent an horrific accident occurs. In its aftermath, Margaret struggles to understand what happened on the mountain and how it has transformed her and her marriage, perhaps for ever.

When Audrey and Ronny win the National Lottery, their troubles seem to be over. Bills can be met, the loan sharks paid off, and their cleaning and cowboy-builder jobs gleefully ditched off. The threat of external change to the beloved cactus farm looms throughout the story because three men in steel toe boots have come to stake a well right in front of Grandma Waters’ house.

In the Shoreditch District of East London, Brick Lane is known as a rough part of town, and the derelict, abandoned commercial building on Princelet Street only adds to that reputation. The whole building is dusty, dirty, and falling apart - not the spot anyone would expect a young couple to open a non-profit cafe. Although Aasha and Christopher doubt themselves, they see the potential in this decrepit location. They’ve left their fancy, highly paid, and sought after corporate jobs to dedicate their lives to helping people in need.
