The rain in Aloisville is never-ending, and no one can remember when it started. There's not much they can remember. With every drop that hits their skin, a bit of memory is washed away. Stay too long in the wet, and you'll lose everything you used to be. By the time Laverne begins keeping a journal, the small town she calls home has been irreparably changed. Every drop of water is dangerous, from leaky faucets to the near-constant rainfall, and a careless trip outside can mean a life down the drain.

In a post-apocalyptic world, where danger roams in many forms, 17-year-old Waverly seeks protection in the town of Crestwood after her boyfriend is ruthlessly killed by lawless raiders. But what she finds is a place wrought with mystery, shady dealings, and more instability than she anticipates.

What if the world ended overnight and everyone died but you? How would you cope? What would you do to take care of yourself when there is very little food left in your cupboard and no clean water coming out of your faucet? And you have a little dog who must eat and drink, too?

The once beautiful earth is now nearly dead. No winds blow - the weather never changes. Filling every valley and all the low lands, acidic clouds the color of cinnamon lay heavy as they have for the past 50 years. Where the red cloud meets the mountains is known as redline; nothing lives below redline. Without protective clothing and breathable air you will quickly die below redline. Only a few merchants and traders scavenge below redline. Because of the deadly atmosphere, people now call the Earth: ACID.

The Earth’s magnetic poles have shifted, the electrical grid is down, and society has collapsed. Survivors struggle daily to cope, as pestilence and plague take their toll. Famine and strife run amuck in the burning cities. Hospitals are abandoned. A chance discovery made while scavenging in the old attic of an herbalist cache of books gives Zack the added herbal knowledge he needs to fight the rampant diseases occurring in his survivalist community. Forgotten medical knowledge from the Civil War era offers healing for a small group trying to reconstruct society.

When it first happened, the euphoria was palpable. The masses rejoiced in the new reality of no longer having to grow old or die, but brotherhood and good will was soon lost somewhere in the blurred line between infinite and finite and in those who chose differently. Those who still believed that life was meant to have a natural progression with a beginning and an end became destined to live their lives out on the streets. Those who accepted the glorious gift of "Foreverlife" lived interminably in their bliss - or so it seemed.
