A skeletal body is unearthed in a wooded area of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. DI James Bliss, together with DC Penny Chandler, investigates the case and discovers that the young female victim had been relocated from her original burial site. A witness is convinced that a young female was struck by a vehicle back in the summer of 1990 and that police attended the scene. However, no record exists of either the accident or the reported victim. As the case develops, two retired police officers are murdered.

Fresh out of uniform, DC Jimmy Bliss finds himself at the centre of an undercover sting. Enlisted by a crew of villains to crack a safe, he fears his cover is blown when he’s seen in the wrong place at the wrong time. But on the night of the job, things run smoothly enough until the gang leader changes the location of the heist. As the job spirals out of control, Bliss has to trust his instincts and buy some time. There’s just one problem: he has no idea if his team know what has become of him.

Thirty-nine-year-old Megan Fallon is in a pickle. Not only is she suffering from empty-nest syndrome, but she's lost the job she loved, and her fiance's run off with her hairdresser. When he learns that one of his business cards was found among the victim's clothing and he is told what was written on the back of it, Bliss is immediately troubled. The card was one of five he handed out to trafficked young women he and his team had previously rescued from a shipping container.

One night. Two shootings. Two victims. When DI Bliss arrives at the scene of the second murder, he recognises the same three-shot pattern as the first. But there is one major difference: the second victim has been decapitated, the head nowhere to be found. When a second headless corpse is discovered the following day, Bliss and his team realise the killer is on a spree - and he’s not done yet. There are four more headless victims, and the police believe they know why.

When DI Bliss prevents 15-year-old Molly from jumping from a hotel roof, he has no idea their paths will cross again. A county-lines mule, Molly is questioned by the drugs squad, but Bliss becomes convinced she is in danger and attempts to have her relocated. A local drug dealer and a London-based enforcer have other ideas. Meanwhile, the remains of a freelance Journalist are discovered alongside an archaeological find, which brings an old flame back into Bliss’ life.

When a torched body is found in a country lane, DI Bliss and Chandler are called in to investigate. The detectives are drawn towards recent missing person reports and believe their victim will prove to be one of them. Bliss thinks he knows which and fears the outcome if he is proven right. Soon the body is identified, and Bliss and Chandler discover evidence suggesting this murder might be a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, someone from Bliss’ past needs his help, and soon he is juggling his personal life with the demanding case.

Did he willingly commit suicide or was he coerced? And what, if any, connection is there to an abandoned vehicle whose owner cannot be traced? As Bliss and his team dig deeper, they soon realise there are three people now missing—a journalist, a mother, and her young daughter. But as the investigations continue, the team struggle with too many unanswered questions.

Having spent years policing organised crime, Bliss is plunged straight into the heart of a serial murder investigation. Meanwhile, Penny Chandler has been promoted to DS and has been working in London on the Met’s sexual crimes team. But when two rapes are reported on her old patch in Peterborough, Chandler volunteers to interview the victims. Chandler joins the hunt for the attacker and soon notices a possible link between the rapes and Bliss’ murder investigation. Could the same man be responsible?

A priceless relic has been filched from an Egyptian stronghold. The brazen crime bears the signature of the suave Sir John Smythe, eminent international art thief extraordinaire. He’s better known to Vicky Bliss as John Tregarth—her longtime lover. Vicky flies to Egypt to investigate, promptly tracking down John. He ardently avows his innocence in the case of the purloined relic, but offers no explanation for his frequent leaves of absence. Nor can he account for himself when murder most foul enters the mix.

Meanwhile, her childhood friend, American, Jack Windsor, is renovating the old village school, and is looking for a four-legged friend to share his new home with. Event organizer Megan Fallon needs to find a killer before the biggest night of the year in Bliss Bay village: a charity dinner and auction to raise funds for local children's charities.
