Summer, 2022. When Meg and Cat are forced to take a dangerous shortcut home one night, they notice two men silently following them. On a steaming night in 1977, New York City is plunged into darkness and two boys, Joe and Robbie, are abandoned by their mother, Lois. Forty years to the day after this unforgivable moment, Joe is a hard-drinking ADA and Lois has resurfaced: Joe wakes from another alcoholic fog to learn she’s been found murdered on a Coney Island beach.

In Pennsylvania quando nevica lo fa sul serio, e i cittadini di Joylet questo lo sanno bene. Nel freddo di gennaio, una serie di sfortune si abbatte su questo piccolo paese di minatori, collegato al resto della nazione da un unico grande ponte. Dapprima una tormenta di neve, poi il crollo del ponte stesso, e per finire un blackout totale che isola completamente la cittadina dai centri abitati vicini. Per via della tormenta, Ethel Goldwyn, da poco trasferitasi a Joylet per il nuovo impiego del marito Christopher, si troverà divisa dal coniuge, a lavoro in una miniera fuori dal paese.

Al processo c'è un'atmosfera surreale. Non sembra vero, eppure Emiliano Bardanzellu, cameriere con una laurea in scienze politiche, ha veramente ucciso sua moglie per una bottiglia di plastica riciclata male. Lui non si difende nemmeno. Non ha memoria di cos'è successo. Non parla, fissa il vuoto. Quello che aleggia in aula è un silenzio esterrefatto. Cosa si potrà mai nascondere dietro quel momento di follia, dietro quel black out omicida?
