Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1883 - 1945) was a Russian and Soviet writer who wrote in many genres but specialized in science fiction and historical novels. His short story "The Manuscript Found Under the Bed" was written in 1922 while the author resided in Berlin.

Edward Frederic Benson (1867 – 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, best known as the true master of the gothic ghost story. The Other Bed tells the tale of a hotel guest who is allocated what appears to be a very fine first floor room at a highly reasonable price. There are two beds in the room and even on the first night, the weary traveller develops an inexplicable horror of one of these beds.

In the 21st century we may believe air travel is dangerous. In the era in which Mark Twain lived the same was felt for train travel. However, this short story allows the author to explain why he believed that lying in bed was much more dangerous and why he would by accident insurance whenever he was home, but felt entirely safe on the road. The train agent in the story may have wished he had never asked the author a question.

In The Adventures of Danny Meadow Mouse, Danny begins his tale regretting the length of his tail until he is corrected by Mr. Toad. Then he has a series of stalkings by Reddy Fox and Granny Fox.
