Ulysses Unt, l’investigatore che grazie alla soluzione del “caso del demone rosso” e del “caso Vaughan” ha acquistato grande credito presso la Royal Society, viene da questa incaricato di investigare sulla misteriosa morte di un piccolo erede al trono.

Dopo aver risolto il mistero del demone rosso, e essere passato attraverso la peste e il grande incendio di Londra, l’investigatore Ulysses Unt viene nuovamente incaricato dalla Royal Society di approfondire la dinamica dell’incidente con cui l'alchimista Thomas Vaughan rimane misteriosamente ucciso nel suo laboratorio di Albury.
