Torkel og Ulf er endelig blevet gamle nok til at komme med de voksne mænd i vikingelandsbyen ud at sejle. Turen går til Hedeby, og drengene er spændte, men det går ikke helt som planlagt. For i Hedeby bliver Torkel taget til fange og ført til Skåne, hvor han bliver solgt som træl til en velhavende gårdejer. Lukas er igen rejst tilbage i tiden til 1700-tallets Danmark for at hjælpe sin ven Tom, der er i fare. Lukas forsøger at få ham om bord på et sukkerskib, der skal til den dansk vestindiske ø Sankt Croix. Der vil Tom forsøge at blive genforenet med sin mor. Mens Lukas er i 1700-tallet, forsøger han også at få løst mysteriet om den mærkelige sorte gravsten uden nogen indskrift, som han ser i kirken under en skoleudflugt i sin egen tid.
