Nel tumulto dei primi anni del XX secolo, l'Europa si ritrovò sospesa in una spirale di tensioni e alleanze che presto sfociò nella Prima Guerra Mondiale. Nel maggio del 1915, l'Italia scelse di rompere i vincoli dell'alleanza con l'Austria-Ungheria e, giustificata da aspirazioni nazionali e territoriali, entrò in guerra a fianco delle Potenze dell’Intesa.
