ある日の暮方の事である。一人の下人が、羅生門の下で雨が止むのを待っていた。彼は四五日前に主人に暇を出されていた。雨が止んだところで、彼に行き先は無かったのである。羅生門の楼の内には、噂に聞いた通り、幾つかの死骸が無造作に棄てられていたが、その中に蹲っている人間を見た。檜皮色の着物を着た、背の低い、痩やせた、白髪頭の、猿のような老婆であった。その老婆は、女性の死骸の首に両手をかけると、丁度、猿の親が猿の子の虱をとるように、その長い髪の毛を一本ずつ抜きはじめた。その様を見た下人は、悪を憎む心に駆られ、太刀に手をかけながら、大股に老婆の前へ歩みよった。老婆は、一目下人を見ると、まるで弩にでも弾かれたように、飛び上った。下人は、老婆が死骸につまずきながら、慌てふためいて逃げようとする行手を塞いで、こう罵った。
「おのれ、どこへ行く」……
