When Matt logged onto Zombie Wars Online, he expected another fun-filled night of zombie killing with his best online friends. When the end of the world arrived, it came not with a bang, as most expected, but with more of a "pfft" instead. Humanity has been torn asunder and brought to the edge of total annihilation in less than an hour. For those who died, it was a quick death, so fast that their brains didn't have time to process the pain signals from their nerves. For those who survived, the true horror is about to begin as they struggle to not only stay alive, but come to grips with the shocking realization about what - and who - was responsible.

On July 7, 2007, the first-ever zombie outbreak took place in Brooklyn, NY. Four survivors were able to escape and live through the horrors. These survivors included Angel, Maria, Luis, and Joe. While most literature will say there were four survivors who survived that fateful day, there was one survivor who was never spotted or even mentioned. He will always be known as the unknown survivor of the first outbreak. This survivor is known as George Fisher, and he knows the ins and outs of Hybrid.

تصل أماندا إلى شقة آيريس وسيجريد وتبقى بصحبتهما، ويقررن النجاة معًا. ولكن لم تعد المدينة آمنة. فالناس باتوا يحملون خطرًا كبيرًا. أما عن دانو فيرى المرأة التي لاحقها مجددًا ويختبئ داخل الحديقة المطلة على منزلها مقررًا مراقبتها عن بعدٍ قبل أن يتخذ قرارًا هامًا يأخذ حياته لمنحنٍ جديد.

تصل المجموعة إلى مركز تسوق بخارج المدينة، كل شيء مهجور وغارق في الصمت، لكن بدا أن هناك أشخاصًا آخرين قد سبقوهم في الوصول إلى هنا. وفجأة يندلع انفجارٌ قويٌّ كاد يفقدهم أعصابهم. يهرعون لمحلٍّ مخصص للأثاث للاختباء في داخله، وكذلك لحصول الأطفال على قسطٍ من الراحة، تحاول أماندا وآيريس التفكير في خطة بشأن نجاتهم.

تحاول ميلا البحث عن شيءٍ ما خلال ملفات الكمبيوتر اللوحي الخاص بمارك لتفسير حادثة انتحاره، تحدث تصرفات غريبة ومريبة عن علماء سيرن. بينما في الوقت الحالي تنتقل سارا للعيش مؤقتًا مع آدم. يصطحب آدم قط سارا مومو؟ ولكن هل هو قطها مومو فعلًا؟

تختبئ آيريس وسيجريد في شقتهما وتحاولا التكيُّف مع الواقع الجديد. أما أماندا فتتنقل بين شوارع المدينة بحثًا عن الطعام والشراب. كل شيء يبدو ميتًا وفارغًا إلا أن هناك بعض الناجين الذين يشكلون خطرًا مخيفًا. يرى دانو امرأة تركض في الشارع فيقرر ملاحقتها دون أن يكشف عن نفسه.

بعد إطلاق النار العنيف، يلتحق دانو بالثلاثي، ويبدأوان في الهرب باتجاه الجنوب بعيدًا عن المدينة. ليروا بأعينهم ما ألحقه الفيروس بالمدينة من خرابٍ ودمار. انتشرت الجثث الميتة في كل مكان، بينما تكدست الطرق بالسيارات المهجورة. كانوا في حاجة إلى العثور على طعامٍ وشراب وملجأ يحميهم من ظلمات وأهوال الليل.

يسير دانو وحيدًا باتجاه المدينة في حالة من التعب والحيرة محاولًا استيعاب ما حدث، فالكهرباء قطعت عن المدينة بالكامل ولا توجد أي إشارة لشبكات الهاتف.. كل شيء لا يعمل. أما عن أماندا فقد استيقظت لتوها بعد أن فقدت وعيها ليومٍ كامل لتجد نفسها مضطرة للهرب إلي الشرفة بعد اقتحام شخصٌ مسعور لشقتها.

يستقل آدم وسارا سيارتها إلى أويونا ليختبرا صحة نظرية كريستيان ولكنهما يواجهان عائقًا غير متوقعٍ. وبينما تفحص ميلا غُرَف علماء سيرن؛ تعثر على أدوات قياس غريبة بداخلها! وفجأة تُغطي قرية شارو أصواتُ هدير مفزعة جديدة، وتزعم سيليا أنه لم يعد بمقدور أحد مغادرة القرية.

يحاول آدم إصلاح علاقته بسارا، وعندما يتحدث مع كريستيان بشأن سقف منزلهم المحطَّم يجده يتمتم بكلماتٍ غير مفهومة؛ عن قطعه للطريق من أويونا إلى قريتهم في ثلاث دقائق فقط وهو الذي يُقطَع عادة في عشرين دقيقة! وعند عودته إلى منزله يرى ظلًا يجعله يفقد أعصابه. بينما يعكف لوكاس على حل شفرة كمبيوتر مارك اللوحي في حانة ميلا.
