Humanity faces an enemy from space. Dangerous, to be sure, but behind them is the ultimate enemy. This one threatens not only the people on Prime and Darwin's World, but all humans on all dimensions! And this enemy is armed with a disintegrator ray that humans have no defense against. And as usual, humanity is caught off guard. There are few spaceships and even fewer that are suitable for converting to warships. Humanity must delay the oncoming 3,000-ship fleet until Matt and the humans on Prime and Darwin's World can mount an effective defense....

In the introduction to this selection of tales of the macabre, anthologist Arthur Reeve writes: "What is the fascination we feel for the mystery of the ghost story? Man is incurably fascinated by the mysterious. If all the ghost stories of the ages were blotted out, man would invent new ones. For, do we not all stand in awe of that which we cannot explain, of that which, if it is not in our own experience, is certainly recorded in the experience of others, of that of which we know and can know nothing?"

The joint NSA/CIA school worked, although not as its designers intended. Some did, indeed, develop usable telepathy. Others were partially successful, able to communicate mind-to-mind, but only with others like themselves. And some gained abilities the school’s designers never intended - psychokinesis or the ability to move objects by mental power alone; levitation, which in practical terms, is the ability to fly; and much more. People interact largely through personal communicators, a 25th century version that combines the personal computer and the cell phone. Much of the interaction is done through the worldwide semi-sentient computer net known as Central. Prime's population is declining. The primary cause of death is self-termination. Few children are being born. The futurists, aided by Central, conceive a desperate gamble: retrieve people from the past, from a time when populations were growing. Reconstitute their failing bodies, then winnow out those who might have the qualities Prime needs.

Alice Adams follows the day-to-day life of a young woman who dreams of climbing the social ladder and escaping from her middle-class background. She struggles with the constant tension between her parents and her older brother. When a wealthy young man becomes interested in her, she weaves a fictional life during their discussions; it is eventually exposed.
