Careful by the Railing is set in Northern California, and is in the tradition of American fiction. Lou, the main character, wanders from town to town. He realizes that he is in the middle of his life, and that he is still searching for love, and a place to call home. His life is pretty much under control except for his alcoholic boss, his 14-year-old daughter who has mysteriously arrived back in his life, and his new maybe girl friend April. Plagued by dreams in which he is terrified of his father's rage, Lou never gets a full night's sleep.

Cammie is a healthy little girl who lives with her mother, father, little sister Prissy, and her grandmother. Cammie thinks there is something wrong with her because she hates her mother and yet loves her too. She feels lonely and scared many times. Her daddy works nights and she doesn’t feel safe with her mother. When Daddy has an accident and has to stay home to recuperate, things take an unusual turn. He becomes involved in his little girls’ lives and realizes that his wife isn’t the person he thought she was.

Meet Nataly, a loving father, ex-husband, and hitman. He’s charming and likable, but the decisions of his past keep haunting him and tear the people closest to him away. A decision he makes to not kill a mark costs him everything and sends his life spinning out of control. Nataly is forced to fight for his family at all costs and ultimately pays the price to protect those he loves.
