Cantor Judith Steel was born in Berlin at the beginning of WWII. Her family was Jewish, and they escaped aboard the ship St. Louis in 1939 when she was an infant, only to be turned away by Cuba and the US. The ship was returned to Europe. Her family disembarked in Belgium and was interred in Camp Gurs. Her father was able to sneak her out to a French Catholic family, who hid her during the war.

For his final navigation exam, he actually plotted a course that landed a fictional destroyer somewhere in the Sierra Mountains. Nevertheless, in in August of 1953, he reported to his first assignment aboard the USS Vermillion. He would be overseeing the First Division for training in amphibious landings.

My two great-grandfathers, Jasper Smith and Ellwood Janney, served in the 18th Michigan Infantry during the American Civil War. In 1864 the 18th found itself in Decatur, Alabama, way down south across the Tennessee River. There, along with newly organized Black Union soldiers, they had to stop Confederate forces under General Hood and the notorious Nathan Bedford Forrest. Had they failed, Nashville likely would have fallen into Confederate control and caused the defeat of President Lincoln in the looming election.

William Henry (Harrison) Heard (1850-1937) was born into slavery and became a clergyman of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as United States Ambassador to Liberia from 1895 through 1898. His autobiography contains a chapter on men who had influenced his life, and a poem on his life by Ephraim Tyler.
