Locke Lamora ist ein Held. Nein, eigentlich ist er das nicht: Er ist ein Dieb, ein Lügner und ein Ganove, wenn auch mit guten Manieren. Mit seiner Bande bewegt er sich in den Kanälen und engen Gassen des Herzogtums Camorr, um die Nobilität um ihre Schätze zu erleichtern. Und darin ist Locke unschlagbar, denkt er zumindest. Bis ein weiterer Verbrecher in Camorr auftaucht. Locke muss handeln - und das Abenteuer seines Lebens beginnt.

Nella misteriosa città di Camorr un orfano ha vita dura, e spesso breve. Ma il giovane Locke Lamora riesce a eludere la morte e a non farsi catturare come schiavo, fino a diventare un furfante provetto sotto la tutela del Forgialadri, un talentuoso artista della truffa. A capo della banda di fratelli dalle dita leste, noti come Bastardi Galantuomini, Locke diventa presto celebre, e si fa beffe persino del più temuto re della malavita.

Doveva essere il colpo più clamoroso della loro carriera, invece si è rivelato un... clamoroso fiasco. Così Locke e il suo fedele compagno Jean sono riusciti a malapena a salvare la pelle. Almeno, Jean ci è riuscito: Locke sta morendo, avvelenato in modo lento ma inesorabile da una sostanza che nessun alchimista o dottore può combattere. Ma quando la fine sembra ormai vicina, una donna misteriosa offre a Locke un'opportunità che potrà salvarlo, o ucciderlo. Le elezioni del Konseil sono imminenti, e le diverse fazioni hanno bisogno di una pedina da muovere a loro piacimento.

Dopo un violento combattimento con la malavita che li ha quasi uccisi, Locke e il suo fedele compare Jean fuggono dalla città in cui sono nati e approdano agli esotici lidi di Tal Verrar per curarsi le ferite. Ma neppure all'estremità occidentale del mondo civilizzato possono riposare, e presto tornano a dedicarsi a ciò che sanno fare meglio: rubare ai ricchi e intascare il ricavato. Questa volta il loro obiettivo è oltremodo ambizioso: la torre di Peccapicco, la casa da gioco più esclusiva e più sorvegliata che ci sia.
