Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared and admired crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. But their glory days are long past; the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk - or a combination of the three. Then a former bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help: his daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy horde 100,000 strong and hungry for blood.

Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown. When the biggest mercenary band of all rolls into town, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It's adventure she wants-and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death. It's time to take a walk on the wyld side.

Tam Hashford hat genug von ihrem langweiligen Dasein als Schankmaid in ihrem kleinen Dorf und von der fast schon erstickenden Fürsorge ihres alleinstehenden Vaters. Sie träumt von einem Leben voller Abenteuer und Gefahren, einem Leben wie es die Söldnertruppen führen. Als eines Tages Fable, die Truppe der legendären »blutigen« Rose, im Dorf Station macht, ergreift Tam ihre Chance: Sie heuert bei Fable als Bardin an und geht mit ihren großen Idolen auf Tour. Noch hat Tam keine Ahnung, dass Rose auf einer hochriskanten Mission in den Norden ist.

Einst war Clay Cooper Mitglied der gefürchtetsten Söldnertruppe im ganzen Land. Kein Ungeheuer, das nicht von ihnen besiegt wurde. Keine Jungfrau in Nöten, die nicht von ihnen gerettet wurde. Inzwischen liegen die Heldentage lange hinter Clay - er hat eine Familie, arbeitet bei der Stadtwache. Dann steht eines Tages sein Freund Gabriel vor der Tür und bittet Clay um Hilfe bei einer Mission, der sich nur die tapfersten Krieger anschließen würden - oder die dümmsten: Gabriel will die alten Gefährten zusammentrommeln und in ein neues Abenteuer ziehen.
