For as long as I can remember, I've had one dream. Go to the same college as my friends, become the starting quarterback of a division one team, and hear my name announced to the world come draft day. The path was clear, and things were falling in place perfectly. And then she came along. Now I'm in love with a girl . . . whose heart was buried alongside the boy she gave it to. The ghost I can't compete with. The father of her newborn son. She wants me to walk away, to focus on my love for football, but I can't, because I have a new dream. And it begins and ends with them.

Fake. That's what we are. That's what we agreed to be. So why does it feel so real? I thought it would have been harder, convincing everyone our school's star receiver was mine and mine alone, but I was wrong. We played our parts so well that the lines between us began to blur until they disappeared completely. The thing about pretending, though, is that someone's always better at it, and by the time I realized my mistake, there was no going back.

“You don’t belong.” No words whispered in anger have ever rung more true. They’re the Kings of Brayshaw with the world at their feet, destined for greatness and in need of control. I’m the girl from the ghetto with nothing to offer and as defiant as they come. They say it doesn’t matter, that I’m one of them now, and nothing could ever change that. Not even me, should I dare try. But they’re wrong. They underestimate how far I’ll go to protect them. Trouble is coming...and they have no idea.

"Girls like you aren't exactly welcomed at a place like this, so keep your head down and look the other way." Those were the exact words of my social worker when she dropped me in my newest hellhole, a place for "troubled teens". I didn't listen, and now I'm on their radar. Too bad for them, I don't follow rules. Too bad for me, they're determined to make sure I do. Inconceivably attractive and treated like kings...these are the boys of Brayshaw High.

"Trust only those who earn it." A sentiment I follow without direction but holds more consequence than ever before. One decision, five lives, three futures. This is what's at stake. One night, one choice, four broken Brayshaws. That is where we're headed. Unless I stop it. I have to stop it. I have to remind him of what he's chosen to forget. My town. My choice. My ending.

Nachdem ich mich monatelang geweigert hatte, habe ich zugestimmt, nach Alrick Falls zu ziehen. Meine Familie hatte das für das Beste gehalten – eine neue Umgebung sei gut für mich – und ich hatte die ewig gleichen Unterhaltungen satt.

Nach Monaten des Schweigens steht sie nun auf meiner Veranda und wartet darauf, dass ich sie wieder hereinlasse. Es ist aber jedes Mal das gleiche Spiel, und ich weiß, wie es enden wird. Ich gebe ihr alles, was ich habe, und sie nimmt es auf dem Weg zurück zu ihm mit sich.

„Mädchen wie du sind an einem Ort wie diesem nicht gerade willkommen, also bleib unauffällig und schau weg.“ Das waren die genauen Worte meiner Sozialarbeiterin, als sie mich in meinem neuesten Höllenloch absetzte, einem Ort für „problematische Teenager“.

Keine im Zorn geflüsterten Worte haben jemals wahrer geklungen. Sie sind die Könige von Brayshaw, denen die Welt zu Füßen liegt, die zu Großem bestimmt sind und die Kontrolle brauchen. Ich bin das Mädchen aus dem Ghetto, das nichts zu bieten hat und so trotzig ist, wie man nur sein kann.

"Vertraue nur denen, die es verdienen.“ Ein Grundsatz, dem ich blind folge, der aber mehr Bedeutung hat als je zuvor. Eine Entscheidung, fünf Leben, drei Zukünfte. Das ist es, was auf dem Spiel steht. Eine Nacht, eine Entscheidung, vier gebrochene Brayshaws. Das ist es, worauf wir zusteuern. Es sei denn, ich verhindere es. Ich muss es verhindern. Ich muss ihn daran erinnern, was er vergessen hat. Meine Stadt. Meine Wahl. ein Ende.
