Da den rige irsk-amerikaner Patrick O'Neill vender hjem til Mountfern for at genopbygge ruinen af slægtens hus som hotel, griber det dramatisk ind i livet for beboerne i den søvnige irske landsby. Alting var under forandring. Den store mand fra USA var kommet med en drøm i sit hjerte og penge på lommen. Med store planer for Mountfern. Lille søvnige Mountfern, hvor folk stille og roligt passer deres egne sager - samtidig med at de er meget optaget af alle andres. På stedet, hvor den herskabelige ejendom Fernscourt nedbrændte, har der i årevis været en uforstyrret legeplads for byens børn.
