James Harrison has recently moved to a restored hunting lodge in Sutherland with his gorgeous private nurse Gloria Dainty. When Hamish visits Mr. Harrison to welcome him to the neighborhood, the old man treats him very rudely. Gloria apologises for her employer's behavior, and Hamish takes the plunge and invites her out for dinner. On the appointed evening, Hamish waits for Gloria at the restaurant. And waits. But Gloria never shows up. Four days later, Gloria's body washes up on the beach near Braikie.

A therapist had moved into Carsely and Agatha Raisin hates her. Not only was this therapist, Jill Davent, romancing Agatha's ex-husband, but she had dug up details of Agatha's slum background. Added to that, Jill was counselling a woman called Gwen Simple and Agatha firmly believed Gwen to have assisted her son in some grisly murders, although has no proof. As the friendship between James and Jill grows stronger, the more Agatha does to try to find out all she can about her. When Jill is found strangled to death in her office two days' later, Agatha finds herself under suspicion.

All Hamish Macbeth ever really wants is a quiet life in the peaceful surroundings of his home in the Highland village of Lochdubh. Unfortunately for him, the time he would normally find most relaxing, after the tourists have gone and before the winter sets in, turns out to be far from peaceful. The new love in his life, Claire, is keen for them to take a holiday and Hamish is mulling over the idea when his newly-assigned constable arrives, presenting Hamish with both a surprise and a secret.

Most newcomers don't stay long in remote Lochdubh - usually boredom, dampness and nosy locals drive them out. But it looks as if artist Effie Garrard has come to stay. When Hamish Macbeth calls on her he's amazed to find the woman in residence after a particularly harsh winter. Unfortunately, Effie is also quite delusional, having convinced herself that fellow local artist Jock Fleming is in love with her and that they are engaged. But after a lover's scrap with Jock, Effie is found dead, poisoned by hemlock.

Womit die Ex-PR-Beraterin aus London allerdings nie gerechnet hätte, ist die Abneigung ihrer neuen Nachbarn: Die Dörfler wollen offenbar lieber unter sich bleiben! Doch Agatha ist es gewohnt, ihren Kopf durchzusetzen. Um Eindruck zu schinden, reicht sie beim örtlichen Backwettbewerb eine Feinkost-Quiche ein, die sie als ihre eigene ausgibt. Dumm ist allerdings, dass einer der Preisrichter stirbt und in Agathas Quiche Gift gefunden wird. Nun muss sie nicht nur zugeben, dass sie gemogelt hat, sondern auch versuchen, den Mordverdacht gegen sich auszuräumen.

Im kleinen Dorf Carsely ist die Freude groß: Agatha Raisin hat endlich James Lacey geheiratet! Doch rasch ziehen dunkle Wolken am Ehehimmel auf, und die Frischvermählten gehen sich aus dem Weg. Agatha unterstellt James sogar, ein Verhältnis zu haben. Als es darüber zu einem hässlichen Streit im Pub kommt, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse: Zuerst verschwindet James und hinterlässt nichts als einen riesigen Blutfleck, dann wird dessen angebliche Geliebte ermordet. Die Polizei verdächtigt vor allem eine Person: die als herrisch und streitsüchtig geltende Ehefrau - Agatha Raisin.

In den Cotswolds herrscht Feierstimmung: Agatha Raisins lang ersehnte Hochzeit mit ihrem Nachbarn, dem stets korrekten James Lacey, steht vor der Tür. Doch dann taucht urplötzlich Agathas tot geglaubter Ehemann Jimmy im Standesamt auf. Die aufgebrachte Agatha geht Jimmy an die Gurgel, der gedemütigte James sucht das Weite, die Hochzeit platzt. Als Jimmy am nächsten Tag ermordet im Straßengraben liegt, sind Agatha und James prompt die Hauptverdächtigen. Kann Agathas Spürnase ihr auch diesmal wieder aus der Patsche helfen?
