1891. Léonie Vernier en haar broer Anatole worden door hun tante uitgenodigd bij haar te komen wonen in Rennes-les-Bains, in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Meredith Martin, een Amerikaanse studente, is bezig met een proefschrift over de beroemde Franse componist Claude Debussy. Haar zoektocht naar de details van zijn leven voert haar naar Rennesles-Bains, waar ze in het hotel Domaine de la Cade verblijft.

Juli 2005. Bij archeologische opgravingen aan de voet van de Pyreneeën ontdekt Alice Tanner twee eeuwenoude skeletten. Het zijn niet alleen de oude botten die haar een onprettig gevoel geven, de gehele tombe straalt een overweldigende, kwaadaardige sfeer uit.
