  • Wine and...Books: BREASTS AND EGGS (2019) by Mieko Kawakami
    Nov 21 2024

    Send us a text

Today we finally drop the episode covering the winner of our first Substack subscriber poll!

BREASTS AND EGGS is the first novel from award-winning Japanese author Mieko Kawakami to be translated into English (though her other novels have all been translated in the few years since!)

Kawakami is a failed J-Pop singer (she released 2 albums during a J-Pop decline) who discovered she loved writing the lyrics more than the music. She turned this into poetry and prose on a blog during the heyday of blogging and drew in 200,000+ reader PER DAY for her writing.

    THE WINES:
    Dallas' Pairing:
Domaine Ciringa “Fosilni Breg” Sauvignon Blanc, Slovenia

    Dave's Pairing:
2022 Nonesuch Mencia, Silvaspoon Vineyard, Alta Mesa, California

  • Wine and...TV: TASKMASTER Series 1 (2015) w/ Mike Shea and Kevin Jospeh
    Nov 15 2024

    Send us a text

In this episode we tackle the British "comedy panel" show where different celebrities (mostly comedians) compete to accomplish a number of creative tasks in the most outlandish and/or embarassing ways possible. We cover all of the first "Series" (what the Brits call a "season") which ran 6 episodes back in 2015.

We're joined by special guests, comic creators MIKE SHEA (Miskatonic High) and KEVIN JOSEPH (Tart) who currently have a crossover between their two books being done as a narrative trading card set! Make sure to check that shit out!

    DAVE'S WINE PAIRING:
NV Bolney Bubbly Sparkling, Sussex, England
Blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Muller Thurgau
A challenge worthy of the Taskmaster himself - make a wine in Britain that competes on the world stage! Thanks to climate change, this is actually happening, especially with quality sparkling wines. This gorgeous blend comes with all the crisp apple, yeasty brioche notes, and tingling effervescence you'd expect from a top quality sparkler.

    DALLAS' WINE PAIRING:
    W&J Graham's 20 Year Tawny Port
Amber, golden tawny color. An excellent bouquet, with a characteristic "nutty" character, such as almonds, and delicious mature fruit with hints of orange peel. Rich, sweet and smooth on the palate, it is perfectly balanced, with a long and lingering finish. Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny Port pairs extremely well with vanilla ice cream or crème brulee. Serve slightly chilled to appreciate the full complexity and sensuous pleasure of this wine.

    MIKE'S NON-WINE PAIRING:
"Suicide" Soda Float aka Dentist's Lament aka The Amputator
Speaking of ice cream: something to match both the sweet zaniness of Taskmaster and the same of the comic card crossover between Mike's Miskatonic High and Kevin's TART, the "Suicide" (a name only us asshole Gen X'ers could have come up with) is when you pour a little of every soda at a soda machine into the same cup. Add ice cream. Et voila! Instant health issues.

    KEVIN'S BEER PAIRING:
Black and Tan (Harp's Lager + Guiness, 50/50)
Ingredients: Harp pale ale and Guinness stout
Preparation: Fill a large Irish pint glass halfway with Harp, then slowly pour Guinness over the back of an upside-down spoon into the glass. The Guinness will settle on top of the Harp due to its lower density.
Taste: A good black and tan blends the stout's robust flavor with the pale ale's refreshing taste.

  • Wine and...Music: THE CIVIL WARS (2013) w/ Maria Banson - Part 2
    Nov 8 2024

    Send us a text

Make sure to listen to Part 1 where we discuss the history of the band, the album, and talk about the wines we chose to pair with it!

Today, we go track by track through the album to showcase just how lovely every single song is, and what a tragedy it was that the band fell apart in the making of the album.

We're joined by San Francisco-based Sommelier and music-trained vocalilst MARIA BANSON, writer of the BRUNELLO BOMBSHELL Substack and podcaster of THE WINE PRESS news.

    THE WINES:
    Maria's Wine Pairing:
    2019 G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe
A rush of red berries, raspberries, and red currants is wrapped by a layer of sweet spices. The mouthfeel opens with a gorgeous balance, great energy and refined tannins, and the aftertaste echoes the aromatics with lingering complexity.

    Dave's Wine Pairing:
2020 Heritage de Saint-Mont Saint Mont
An interesting wine from the little known Saint-Mont region, composed of 65% Gros Manseng, 30% Petit Courbu and 5% Arrufiac. Pear and crisp green apple with a hint of gunflint.

    Dallas' Wine Pairing:
2020 Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla, Matthiasson Vineyard
The 2021 is available to order direct from the winery, but the 2020 can still be found online at various stores willing to ship! An "orange wine" made in the ancient style of Northern Italy.

What a shit shitty week in America, folks.

To "celebrate", we're tackling the abulm THE CIVIL WARS by the band The Civil Wars - their second and final album, as they underwent their own civil war in the making of it! While they were not in a romantic relationship, this is nevertheless considered one of the great "breakup" albums alongside Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" (Stevie Nicks is on record as listening to this album and saying "Oh, that's us.")

We're joined by San Francisco-based Sommelier and music-trained vocalilst MARIA BANSON, writer of the BRUNELLO BOMBSHELL Substack and podcaster of THE WINE PRESS news.

  • Wine and...Movies: ELECTION (1999)
    Oct 31 2024

    Send us a text

Happy Halloween! To celebrate, we tackle the scariest, most terrifying subject matter we could think of: POLITICAL. ELECTIONS.

And America's own election is a scant few days away. So let's watch something that's going to make us laugh and feel GOOD.

ELECTION is the second feature film by Oscar-winning director/writer Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Holdovers) based on the novel by Tom Perrota and starring Reece Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick, Chris Klein, and Jessica Campbell. It was a box office disappointment at the time, but has since gained cult status and Witherspoon's Tracy Flick chararcter has become a pop culture icon.

And this was Dallas' very first time seeing it!

Original Script with original (alternate) ending

    Original/Alternate ending from VHS recording

    THE WINES:
    Dave's Wine Pairing
2021 Private Property Grenache, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey Country, Central Coast, California
Cool climate Grenache, easy to mistake for a Pinot Noir with its lighter color, body, and bracing acidity. If SIDEWAY is director Alexander Payne's Pinot movie, then ELECTION is his cool climate Grenache flick.

Raspberry, strawberry, rhubarb, beetroot, sage, salinity, Private Property is the more affordable ($20 - $30/bottle) second label of Caraccioli Cellars (which does Pinot, Gamay, Chardaonnay, for $40 - $100/bottle). Zingy, fresh, a play of birght red fruitiness + acerbicness to match the lively, cutting satire of the film.

    Dallas' Wine Pairing
2010 Château de Sales, Pomerol, France
The 2010 Château de Sales Pomerol is known for its complex flavor profile, featuring subtle notes of red fruits, earth, and spice. This complexity mirrors the intricate plot and character dynamics in "Election," where seemingly simple high school politics reveal deeper, more nuanced themes.

The 2010 Pomerol has had time to mature and develop and aged into itself. The film and the wine are elegant and well structured.
It’s rich, velvety texture because of the Merlot base make this an excellent pairing for the film with is also extraordinarily smooth. This smoothness pairs well with the film's dark humor and the character of Tracy Flick, whose ambition appears smooth on the surface but hides a more intense core. Both this 2010 and the film have a long, memorable finish.

  • Wine and...Movies: WHO'S THERE? (2018) by Mike Pecci and Will Simmons
    Oct 24 2024

    Send us a text

WHO'S THERE is oe of two films that that aren't available anywhere, but anyone *can* gain access to see them, *IF* they take direct action and DM the director their Top 3 Horror Films, and Top 3 *Demonic* Horror Films.

The director is Mike Pecci and you can DM him on Instagram at inlovewiththeprocesspod.

DM him your Top 3 Horror films and he''ll send you a link to see "12KM", a film about a drilling team that drills 12 kilometers into the earth and unleashes something horrific.

DM him your Top 3 DEMONIC horror films aka any film featuring a demon or demonic possession, and he'll send you a link to see "WHO'S THERE". Something knocks on doors and you DON'T want to find out "who's there".

Who doesn't want to share their favorite horror movies with a horror film director? You can also listen to our full podcast episode about Mike and these films, if you want to know more. Get to it and happy horror season, y'all.

    THE WINES:
    Dallas' Pairing:
Gerard Betrand Trouble xp Red, France
    Grenache Noir | Syrah
A non-filtered, cloudy, organic, vegan wine. The grapes are harvested separately when perfectly ripe, based on grape tastings performed before the harvest. Each grape variety is vinified separately. Some of the Syrah undergoes cold maceration to preserve the integrity of its aromas, whilst the rest of the Syrah and the Grenache grapes go through traditional maceration (de-stemmed harvest). Vinification is temperature controlled (maximum 25°C). The wine is not filtered or clarified, remaining cloudy. It is matured in vats to preserve its fruity aromas.

    Dave's Pairing:
Porto Morgado Ruby (or any Ruby or Late Bottled Vintage [LBV] Port)
One of the best ruby port values out there, this authentic Porto from Portugal is only $10.99 at Trader Joe's across the USA. If you don't live near a TJ's, I'd recommend a Ruby or LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port from DOW or Sandeman - skip the Taylor Fladgates, their ports are only okay at best.

  • Wine and...Movies: HAUNTED HEART (2024) with Screenwriter Rylend Grant
    Oct 10 2024

    Send us a text

The writer of HAUNTED HEART joins us to tell the epic tale of how this movie got made.

16 years from script to screen, directed by Academy-Award winning director, Fernando Trueba, and starring Matt Dillon and Aida Folch.

Rylend Grant has written for the likes of JJ Abrams, John Woo, F Gary Gray, Daveed Diggs, Adam Winguard, Ridley Scott, Justin Lin, and Penelope Cruz. But Haunted Heart was his very first professional screenplay.

Rylend has also written a number of award-winning comics, including BANJAX, THE JUMP, FA SHENG: ORIGINS, THE PEACEMAKERS, and currently being crowdfunded as we speak, THE BREACH, a BLACK MIRROR-esque gritty small town crime drama...you know, if there was a portal to another time/dimension about to open up in said small town, and if there was a massive futuristic army about to kick it's way through and lay waste to said small town.

    Check out THE BREACH!

    Follow Rylend:
    Instagram
    Twitter

    THE WINES:

    Rylend's Wine Pairing:
2001 Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Riserva, Vigna Le Rocche, Barolo DOCG
A well aged Barolo, now at its peak drinking window according to the forecasts. Like the Barolo the characters in the movie drink. Drink 2024 - 2026!

    Dave's Wine Pairing:
2009 Domaine Tatsis Goumenissa (50/50 Xinomavro and Negoska blend), Macedonia, Greece
Or, if you're on a budget, this $35 wine tastes so much like a well aged Barolo it isn't funny. Bottled and then held until the winemakers though it was ready, this is a RECENT RELEASE even though it's 15 years old!!!

    Dallas' Wine Pairing:
    2019 Mylonas Savatiano, Greece
One of the key grapes in many "retsina" wines (wine with pine resin added) this is a rare bottling where the savatiano grape gets to shine on its own, unadulterated.
