What we misunderstand about male on male sexual violence | Interview

  • Summary

  • I asked if teenagers were less likely to be sexually assaulted than children, because they’ve developed some physical strength and that makes them less of a target for an offender.

(For example, a 15-year old is very different to a 9-year old)

But Dr. Kennath explained that this has nothing to do with strength or physical presence. It’s about a power dynamic and if someone gets aroused, or gets a thrill out of exploiting someone more vulnerable than them, then that is what they will do - it doesn’t matter what age they are.

Dr Kennath Widanaralalage is a Lecturer in Psychology at King's College London. He researches men's sexual violence and victimisation, focusing on understanding how men disclose, seek help, and engage with support services. His work also examines criminal justice processes in rape and sexual assault investigations.
