  • Summary

  • The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence against women and girls is a global annual campaign that runs from 25th November to 10th December. The advocacy campaign’s objective is the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls (VAWG). This year, the theme of the campaign is Unite! Activism to end violence against women and girls. Gender equality and elimination of gender-based discrimination are key elements of GIZ’s corporate vision “We work to shape a future worth living around the world.” Consequently, GIZ works towards creating and expanding equal opportunities for all individuals regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. A major cause, symptom, and consequence of gender inequality is gender-based violence (GBV). It is one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide, with far-reaching negative ramifications not only for those directly affected but also for entire societies. It adversely affects the productivity of individuals and organizations, slows down economic growth, and leads to stunted development. It is in this regard that GIZ Kenya joins the rest of the world in advocacy against GBV through a 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) podcast series dubbed #UNiteGIZ Podcast. In recognition that GBV occurs against girls, boys, women, and men, the podcast will focus on GBV broadly and not just violence against women and girls. We will have both GIZ Kenya Gender Focal Points and members of GIZ Kenya partner organizations sharing different perspectives on GBV from their work. The podcast series, which is an advocacy tool, seeks to shed light on some of the GBV dynamics, mitigating measures, and lessons learned. It will run throughout the 16 Days of activism with a topic dedicated to each day. The podcast series is an initiative of the GIZ Kenya Gender Focal Points Network.

    Dec 9 2022
When discussing the response to gender-based violence, we normally focus on survivors' physical well-being and access to justice.
