  • What a load of old rubbish!
    Sep 28 2023

In this episode, Kim and Suzanne initiate you into the complicated world of rubbish separation and recycling, which is expected of all households in Germany. Your hosts, both hailing from the UK, have been living and thriving in Germany for many years and have become kind of “German” about this particular topic ;-)

We share our insights and experiences to assist fellow foreigners in understanding the sometimes frustrating but deeply environmentally-friendly aspects of everyday life in Germany. There’s no escaping it, so sit back, relax and enjoy this episode, which is, as always, full of personal stories and anecdotes. We hope you find it entertaining and informative.

    We talk about:

    • Rubbish separation and recycling – why it’s been so important in Germany for many decades
    • The different coloured wheelie bins can be confusing
    • Plastic/packaging waste
    • Paper waste
    • Glass waste
    • Organic waste (“Biomüll”)
    • Residual waste (“Restmüll”)
    • Collection days are few and far between, so check your local calendar
    • People are protective of their bins because they pay rates by bin size – so don’t put your rubbish in someone else’s bin if you can help it.
    • Buy extra official rubbish bags, otherwise, your waste won’t get taken away.
    • Communal bins for glass and paper
    • Christmas trees
    • Batteries
    • Old pots of paint
    • Defective small electrical goods
    • Large items (“Spermüll”)
    • Recycling centres
    • Ask your neighbours if in doubt
    • Deposit bottles (“Pfand”)
