    Feb 2 2025
Lord's Day: Feb 2, 2025 Preacher: Carlos Montijo Topic: Law & Gospel Distinction Scripture: 1 John 2:27–29, 1 John 2:1, 1 John 3:7, Matthew 7:17–20, 1 John 3:18, James 2:17–18, 1 John 3:2–3, John 5:24–25 27 And as for you, the anointing whom you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as He has taught you, abide in Him. 28 And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He is manifested, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming [before His presence]. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who does righteousness has been born of Him. 1 John 2:27–29 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live." John 5:24–25. The Baptist Larger Catechism, Q143: What are the outward and ordinary means by which Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption? A: The outward and ordinary means by which Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption are His ordinances, particularly the Word, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and prayer; all of which are made effectual to the elect for salvation. Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:42-47; 1 Timothy 4:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21; Ephesians 5:19-20; Ephesians 6:17-18 Q144: How is the Word made effectual to salvation? A: The Spirit of God causes the reading—and especially the preaching—of the Word to enlighten,[1] convince, and humble sinners.[2] The Spirit drives sinners out of themselves and draws them to Christ;[3] He conforms them to His image[4] and subdues them to His will;[5] He strengthens them against temptations and corrupting influences;[6] and He builds them up in God’s grace[7] and establishes their hearts in holiness and comfort through faith to salvation.[8] Nehemiah 8:8; Acts 26:18; Acts 17:11-12; Psalm 19:81 Corinthians 14:24-25; 2 Chronicles 34:18-19, 26-28; Jeremiah 23:28-29; Hebrews 4:12Acts 2:37-41; Acts 8:27-392 Corinthians 3:18; Colossians 1:272 Corinthians 10:4-6; Romans 6:17Matthew 4:4,7,10; Ephesians 6:16-17; Psalm 19:11; 1 Corinthians 10:11; Colossians 1:28Acts 20:32; 2 Timothy 3:15-16; Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Corinthians 3:9-11Romans 16:25; 1 Thessalonians 3:2, 10-13; Romans 15:4; Romans 10:13-17; Romans 1:16 Francis Turretin: “Christ will be the judge in that very visible nature in which he was condemned for us…. This he will do especially both for the greater consolation of the pious [believers] (who will look upon him as their defender and Advocate instead of their judge) and for the greater terror and confusion of the wicked [unbelievers, hypocrites, antichrists, etc.]… The process of the judgment is such that mention may indeed be made of good works, but not of their evil works…. The pious will not hear the publication of their sins, but the reward of their love and beneficence.” (Institutes of Elenctic Theology, 20th topic, Q. 6) John Calvin: “...for it is impossible to think of the dreadful majesty of God without being filled with alarm [which 1 Jn 2:28 also addresses]; and hence the sense of our own unworthiness must keep us far away [i.e., “shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.” That is—] until Christ interpose [intervenes, advocates, mediates], and convert a throne of dreadful glory into a throne of grace, as the Apostle teaches that thus we can “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16)…. Christ given to us by the kindness of God is apprehended and possessed by faith [alone], by means of which we obtain in particular a twofold benefit: first, being reconciled by the righteousness of Christ [alone], God becomes, instead of a judge, an indulgent Father; and, secondly, being sanctified by his Spirit [His anointing], we [therefore] aspire [strive] to integrity and purity of life.[23]” (Institutes of the Christian Religion, III.xx.17; III.xi.1) The very same doctrine which Martin Luther proclaimed to be the article by which the church stands or falls, and which John Calvin trumpeted as the principal ground [foundation] on which religion must be supported, [the hinge on which religion turns!], and which forged the conflict with Rome during the Protestant Reformation, and resulted in the largest schism in the history of the church—is the doctrine of justification by faith alone. • The Anointing of Truth vs the Lies of Deceivers | 1 John 2:26-27
    Jan 19 2025
Lord's Day: Jan 19, 2025 Preacher: Carlos Montijo Series: First John Topic: End Times Scripture: 1 John 2:20–27, 2 Timothy 2:13, John 8:51, Psalm 27:1–2, 1 John 4:4, 1 Corinthians 14:8, Galatians 1:10, Hebrews 5:14, 2 Peter 3:18 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let that which you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26 These things I have written to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 And as for you, the anointing whom you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as He has taught you, abide in Him. 1 John 2:20-27 In light of all “these things” that have been written to us, you may have heard the saying that eschatology is only of secondary or tertiary importance Wrong: Eschatology is not always a matter of secondary/tertiary importance This is confusing and misleading, because it’s one thing to have different views of the eschatological millennium (premillennialism, postmillennialism, amillennialism), but it’s another thing to have different views of the final judgment and of antichrist, more consequential Especially in light of the repeated warnings of the apostles against the eschatological Antichrists and the Antichrist, because “‘the mystery of iniquity [is] already [at] work...’ (2 Thess 2:7). So Antichrist must always be seen as a present reality in AD 65, in 1517, in 1999, [in 2025!]. Antichrist’s appearance belongs to the last days, and according to John, the spirit of Antichrist manifested in the false teachers was a harbinger [sign] of the end time.”[6]There are many antichrists, worldly antichrists and religious antichrists, there is a spirit of antichrist in the world and in churches, true and false churches, and then there is the antichrist—the papacy—all of whom “are trying to deceive you” (v. 26) The doctrines of the final judgment and of antichrist are too vital to dismiss or get wrong, they are highly consequential, and, to the extent that they are infected with error, can lead to a dangerous downstream of errors, heresies, and confusion They are not matters of mere secondary importance that we can just disagree on without any consequence Because a false view of the final judgment can pervert the true gospel—New Perspective on Paul, Final Justification/Salvation And because failing to identify/expose antichrists and the antichrist is a failure to identify ours and the true church’s mortal enemies—and makes us ineffective and worse, possibly do more harm than good, in the spiritual battle of this divine drama of redemption and judgmentUnless—we are being careful to exercise and train our senses to discern good and evil, true and almost true, Christ and Antichrist, through constant practice (Heb 5:14)These doctrines are of vital importance to the salvation of our own souls and to knowing, identifying, exposing, and defending our faith, and our souls, against the real enemy and ever-present enemies—antichrist and many antichrists As soldiers of Christ’s army, we must adequately train with the whole armor of God and of light to fight against our mortal enemies But have no fear—the Captain of our Salvation is here! The leader of God’s spiritual army—Jesus Christ the Righteous, He leads the way, our Anointed Lord, Master, and Omnipotent Savior, our Conqueror, our Prophet, Priest, and King So then, continue to abide in Him, beloved, to grow in Him, not by your own mere strength and efforts, but by the anointing of His Spirit in the truth of the saving gospel, by His means of grace Tim Kauffman’s eschatology series on Semper Reformanda Radio: The Danielic Imperative https://thorncrownministries.com/eschatology Steve Matthews’ Radio Lux Lucet https://thorncrownministries.com/radio-lux-lucet We meet on Sundays for worship at 10:00am: ThornCrown Covenant Baptist Church4712 Montana AveEl Paso, Texas 79903 Contact us at: web: ThornCrownCovenant.Churchcall/text: (915) 843-8088email: ThornCrownCovenantBChurch@gmail.com Scripture quotations taken from the (LSB®) Legacy Standard Bible®, Copyright © 2021 by The Lockman Foundation. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26 These things I have written to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 1 John 2:20-26 Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf was the founding bishop of the Moravian church, who had an authoritarian temperament and hyper-Pietistic compulsion,[1] which led to many imbalances, extremes, and excesses. He advocated Rigid Pietism, downplaying objective doctrine in favor of subjective experience and emotion, and in this case inappropriate sensuality, and a rigorous monastic-style mystical worship, followers practically lived in church every single dayFamous for saying: Preach the gospel, die and be forgotten.Only atheists attempt to comprehend God with their mind.I have one passion, it is He. Only He.I am destined to proclaim the message, unmindful of personal consequences to myself.Missions, after all, is simply this: Every heart with Christ is a missionary, every heart without Christ is a mission field.[2] “He allowed women to preach, to hold office, and to be ordained. Anna Nitschmann, the leader of the Single Sisters and later Zinzendorf’s second wife, seems to have functioned as a bishop among the women.”[3]He took age-segregated worship to an even further unbiblical extreme by organizing his followers to also live in age/gender-specific groups rather than with nuclear family[4]He oversexualized Christian theology, worship and hymns, with sensual “Blood and Wounds Theology”Zinzendorf proclaimed all souls to be female, including men’s, presumably to avoid the charge of homosexuality when the men “worshiped” Christ, and subsequently, the son of Zinzendorf proclaimed that the men were actually female and therefore eligible to be brides of Christ[5] “He compared the Holy Trinity to a family. The father, said he, was God [so far so good]; the mother was the Holy Ghost [and he referred to the Holy Spirit primarily as “she,” emphatically so: “‘she’ is the third person of the Godhead”[6]]; their son was Jesus [which can lead to another Trinitarian error, EFS]; and the Church of Christ, the Son's fair bride, was born in the Saviour's Side-wound, was betrothed to Christ on the Cross, was married to Christ in the Holy Communion, and was thus the daughter-in-law of the Father and the Holy Ghost. We can all see the dangers of this. As soon as human images of spiritual truths are pressed beyond decent limits, they lead to frivolity and folly [and imbalances and false teaching]; and that was just the effect at Herrnhaag [Zinzendorf’s failed religious commune]. The more freely the [Moravian] Brethren used these phrases, the more childish they became. They called the Communion the "Embracing of the Man"; and thus they lost their reverence for things Divine.”[7] We meet on Sundays for worship at 10:00am: ThornCrown Covenant Baptist Church4712 Montana Ave El Paso, Texas 79903 Contact us at: web: ThornCrownCovenant.Churchcall/text: (915) 843-8088email: ThornCrownCovenantBChurch@gmail.com Scripture quotations taken from the (LSB®) Legacy Standard Bible®, Copyright © 2021 by The Lockman Foundation. These alternatives, preterism and futurism, were designed to deflect attention from the papacy as Antichrist by making Antichrist exclusively a figure of the past (preterism) or of the future (futurism). In this way the Jesuits attempted to refute the Reformers’ identification of the papacy as Antichrist. The first alternative developed by the Jesuits was Preterism—which is now the view held by many [liberals and] post-millennialists [who tend to deny the inspiration of the Bible or spiritualize away relevant Scriptures]. In the words of William Tyndale, the English Reformer whom God used to translate the Bible into English, and who was eventually betrayed and burned at the stake at the behest of King Henry VIII and the Pope: “…it is impossible to preach Christ, except thou preach against antichrist; that is to say, them which with their false doctrine and violence of sword enforce to quench [to suppress] the true doctrine of Christ. And as thou canst heal no disease, except thou begin at the root; even so canst thou preach against no mischief, except thou begin at the bishops [of Rome].”

  • God Sent Forth His Son | Galatians 4:1-6
    Dec 22 2024

Lord's Day: Dec 22, 2024 Preacher: Carlos Montijo Topic: Christmas Scripture: Matthew 2:1–12, Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 9:6–7, Luke 2:19–20

CORRECTIONS: I misspoke at around 00:14:00 when I said that God is not the Father. I meant to say that Jesus is not the Father in reference to Isaiah 9:6, where the Messiah is identified as the "Eternal Father," or, rather, the Father of Eternity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all equally God, one in essence and three in Persons. I also misspoke at around 00:33:44 when I said that Jesus was born a sinner like everyone else. I meant to say that Mary was born a sinner like everyone else.

Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and stewards until the date set by the father. 3 So also we, while we were children, were enslaved under the elemental things of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:1–6

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (LSB)
