  • S2 E1 | Why We Love Darters For Surfcasting
    Jan 6 2025

In this week's episode, the guys finally get around to dedicating an entire episode to the almighty darter. They've mentioned this fantastic surfcasting plug in nearly every episode of Season 1, but with the first episode of Season 2 they figured it was high time to go all in on the subject. And what better place to get started than by talking about how it became such a staple plug in both Jerry and Toby's surf bag. Find out if they guys had some sort of an "Ah Ha!" moment, or if it was a slow grind, and stay tuned for more episodes on the darter in 2025 as they dive into the why you need to start filling your plug bag with darters if you haven't already done so!

  • S1 E60 | Run & Gun For Trophy Bass with Pete Utschig
    Dec 30 2024

On this episode of the podcast, we have big-fish expert Pete Utschig talking about one of his strengths: the run and gun style of fishing for big, trophy stripers.

You might associate running-and-gunning with small fish and blitzes, or big balls of bait and birds, but that's not the only way to do it- and it doesn't have to be a chaotic, random affair. Pete breaks down how he utilizies his ability, planning, and energy to "stack em' up and knock em' down" fishing as many spots as he can in a given night, given the conditions in front of him.

This is one for the books- we think you'll agree!

  • S1 E58 | Forgotten Surfcasting - The Goo Goo Eyes
    Dec 16 2024

In this episode of The Surfcast Podcast, Jerry and Toby kick off a new segment in which they discuss a topic from surfcasting history or lore that has gone out of fashion for one reason or another. The topic this time around is the Goo Goo Eyes plug, first produced by Leo Cooper of Stratford, Connecticut in the 1950s. Over the years some outstanding catches have been made on the various Goo Goo Eyes models, including Charlie Cinto's 73-pounder landed by boat off Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts. Designed as a boat trolling plug, it didn't take long for surfcasters to put it to good use as well, and the guys recount some stories of their own made over the years.

While the originals are now long out of production and only available at used tackle swaps and places like eBay, a couple modern, commercial builders produce a version of the Goo Goo Eyes including Afterhours Custom Plugs https://www.afterhoursplugs.com/ and Lemire's Plugworks https://www.lemiresplugworks.com/.

  • S1 E54 | Lessons From The Logbook #4, October 2024
    Nov 18 2024

Well listeners, in a down turn of fishing news from the high of the September LFTL episode, Jerry and Toby discuss what ended up being yet another difficult month- both because of the poor state of the fishery, but also simply because "life" got in the way. HOWEVER, there still was some things to learn, and some bright spots, and the guys still have a lot to say about one of the traditionally great months of fall striper fishing. Tune in to hear what they learned, and how it might help you going forward.
