The Song of Elbereth: A Middle-Earth Tale

By: WCAT Radio
  • Summary

  • Two elven maidens, Earelda and Dinfea, are part of the group of wood-elves with Gildor. After hearing Frodo speak with Gildor, Earelda looks at the stars and sees the star of Earendil shining brighter than ever, and she takes it as a sign that Elbereth wishes her to help the hobbits in some way. Gildor joins her, and Earelda tells him that while gazing into the palantir at Emyn Beraid, she was given a vision of Elbereth, who spoke of halflings, the star of Earendil, and the Lady of the Golden Wood. Gildor tells her to take the vision to Elrond, her foster father after her family was killed by orcs, and have him interpret it. Gildor then mentions that he will send messages to Aragorn and Tom Bombadil. Similarly, he sends Earelda and Dinfea ahead of the group to Rivendell.

Earelda and Dinfea meet with Arwen, Earelda's adopted sister. Arwen takes them to her father. Elrond explains to Earelda that the hobbits carry Isildur's Bane; and that the Lady of the Golden Wood is Galadriel, who may explain the part about the Star of Earendil. Elrond then summons Glorfindel, and tells him to go and look for the hobbits.

Earelda and Dinfea then depart for Lothlorien, where Galadriel requests that they acquire the light of the star of Earendil, as she foresees that it will prove a great blessing to the hobbits on their journey.

Earelda is guided by a mysterious singing voice and the light of the stars, towards Lindor. On the way, she is attacked by a phantom which tries to prevent the light of Earendil from being obtained. Earelda is saved by a ranger, Beron, and Tirien, and his sister.

The group proceeds to the Gray Havens, but Cirdan the Shipwright sends them either to the location of Earendil's sunken home in Avernien, or to the island of Himling (where they would be haunted by the ghost of Maedhros, who killed himself after he was burned by a silmaril).

After obtaining the light of Earendil, the group heads back to Lothlorien, where they watch Galadriel gift it to Frodo. The last scene shows the group in Rivendell, listening to Frodo and Sam describe how the use of the phial helped them in their quest.
