  • Creating Valuable Spaces With Guest Bethany Ariahadi
    Jan 23 2023

This episode is so relevant to many. Often we want to host or have guests over but, we feel limited in our home size or resources. Bethany Ariahadi gives some of her insight and heart around why she does what she does, and how she has made some shifts to her own thinking when it came to feeling limited. There is a lot to learn and receive with her words here. She is great at creating warm, and welcoming spaces and atmospheres, and this is should be foundational to why we do what we do. She also points out, that bringing herself is what's important, not trying to be someone else or create a home or space that doesn't represent her.

So, consider for yourself, what could you do with what you have? Who are you, and what is most important when it comes to letting people into your life? Are you a cook or baker? Then cook or bake for them! Do you enjoy a good movie and a glass of wine or beer? Then have someone over to share in the experience! Do you like to do cookouts (grilling/bbq's) then think about who you can invest a little bit of time with, and share in this passion of yours! Your friends, neighbors and even those not in your inner circle will get to experience YOU, and that allows for deeper connections. The point is you don't have to go overboard or be elaborate when it comes to hosting, or sharing your personal space with another person, the point is to share yourself and create a place they will be comfortable and welcome.

In this episode Larissa and Bethany share a restaurant they experienced while Larissa did a quick, surprise visit to the Portland/Vancouver area. They both very much enjoyed the location and overall experience of the Waterfront Taphouse in Vancouver, Wa. It sits right on the Columbia River waterfront in a newer developed area of town. Visiting the Vancouver Waterfront is worth the visit and for a great lunch date or evening meal check out https://thewaterfronttaphouse.com/

Know anyone needing personal or professional cleaners? Bethany Ariahadi has begun a business in the Newberg, Oregon area and is wonderful for your cleaning needs if you have a vacation rental or just need that weekly or monthly quality cleaner. She will take pride in your space and help it feel clean, wonderful and inviting!

  • Start Small....Just Start With Co-Host Paul Mackie
    Jan 18 2023

This is a conversation that was an extension of Larissa and Paul's previous episode 'The Other Side of Boundaries' Episode #10. The conversation took some turns and twists, and so we decided to call this part of that original conversation something completely different. You will hear some great thoughts about boundaries, such as; ' I create a boundary not to keep something out, but a boundary to include something'. P.M. but primarily this episode centers around how we can just start a community, even if its just with one, and what is our purpose when we do so?

There is some great treasures in this conversation and I think you will find ways to relate, and be challenged on how you can take personal responsibility to create community even by just starting with one or two.

Be encouraged neighbor! Your intentional relationships are enough and are creating space for growth, empowerment, health and vitality!

  • The Other Side of Boundaries
    Jan 11 2023

Paul and Larissa discuss and try to re-evaluate what is a boundary in relationships that is healthy? In our modern times, we've gotten really good about not letting anyone 'trigger' our emotions about any given topic or situation. Most have figured out how to cut people out if the relationship feels strained, or there is not a lot of common ground. However, there is some risk when we live this way in our communities. Have we gotten walled in? What is a healthy boundary and what is putting up walls of our hearts? Can we possibly figure out how to live amongst each other, with all kinds of ways of life, and opinions and not cut out people that don't think like us? Is it possible to manage your own emotions and not blame others for how you feel when what they say or do feels offensive? What if that offense is not really about you at all, but all about your perception?

Living this way, will require we learn how to be discerners in all ways-discerners of what is our own troublesome heart and what is someone actually causing harm. We invite you to consider allowing a larger influence of people in your life. You don't have to agree with everyone or everything, in fact we probably never will, but living walled in and in our safe bubbles of influence, may actually cause more harm to us as individuals, and as a whole in society if we don't learn how to consider all people.

This is a very individualist journey, and you must decide for yourself how you will live amongst others, but we hope this brings some light and ideas that may challenge you to be more open and accepting of all kinds of ideas, opinions, lifestyles and perspectives. The goal always is to have peace in your own heart and live at peace with others, as long as all parties want that same objective in the relationship, and will do what they can to contribute peace and extend understanding.

  • You Are Not Your Body
    Jan 4 2023

Deeply personal, Larissa shares her current journey with self-acceptance after realizing she has struggled with Body Dysmorphia, Fat Phobia, and Disordered Eating. The Socially Modern Neighbor wanted to bring this to the table, because often people aren't living out their most healthy lives, and its not because they are overweight, or physically unhealthy, but because they struggle with truly loving themselves. Society has done a lot to convince us and teach us what is 'right' or 'wrong' when it comes to caring for our bodies, and although this is not wrong in of itself, often we forget the more important thing that makes us who we are...our souls, our thinking, and living healthy within our homes and communities.

Its important to remain aware of people groups that we may overlook, or don't realize we are harming by neglecting truthful conversations and awareness of how we may be harming people around us. Bottom line, you are not your body. Your body and health are important, but lets get to the foundation and root of what makes us unique and special.

In this episode Larissa shares her experience at Sotol, a modern cocktail kitchen out of Gilbert, Arizona. For a wonderful rooftop experience, check out Sotol for your next date or night out. https://sotolmck.com/
