The Secret of Being Content: A Journey Through Philippians

By: Lindsay Hausch in Partnership with St.Matthew Lutheran Church
  • Summary

  • Contentment is a mystery. Seriously. When Paul says in his letter to the Philippians that he has “learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,” the Greek word for “learning the secret” is “memuēmai,” which is commonly used to describe mystery. Learning the secret is being initiated into a divine mystery that is revealed through experience. Does that make you feel like you are in the pages of an epic adventure? You are.

Join us on an eight-week journey where we will:
    - dive deeper into Paul's letter to the Philippians,
-learn more about the life of Paul
    -study Scripture more deeply
    - and discover his secret to contentment which is centered on life with Jesus.

    DAILY READING
For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his

good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you

may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a

warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like

stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. Philippians 2:13

In [Jesus] you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed

by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when

you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in

baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in

the working of God, who raised him from the dead. When you were

dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made

you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the

charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and

condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

    Colossians 2:9-14

    QUESTIONS:
Do you get frustrated when you find yourself falling into the same

harmful attitudes or behaviors that you’ve tried to overcome? How

does Jesus help you to keep trying?

Does it give you courage and/or contentment knowing you don’t need

    to figure it out alone?

Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the

Israelites. The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me

with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all

the signs I have performed among them?” Numbers 14:10-11

    QUESTIONS:
What are the situations where you are most likely to grumble?

How could you recognize those things and change your grumbling to

prayer in order to move your heart away from ingratitude and blame?

    WEEKLY READING
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the

gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about

you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,

striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being

frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them

that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by

God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to

believe in him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through

the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have. Philippians 1:27-30

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my

presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out

your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to

will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become

blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and

crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the

sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to

boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. But even if I

am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service

coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too

should be glad and rejoice with me. Philippians 2:12-18

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own

way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was

oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like

a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so

he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:6-7

    QUESTIONS:

How do you find it hard to lay down your need to be right for the sake

    of doing what’s right?

How are you showing evidence of Proverbs 16:7 in your life, “when a

person’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, they make even their enemies

    live at peace with them”?
