  • S12 Ep 3 - The High Sheriff of Berkshire
    Jun 26 2024

In this episode as we dive into the fascinating history and contemporary duties of the High Sheriff of Berkshire. Our guest, Alexander Barfield, is the 809th person to fill the post and he shares the rich history of the role, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, and its evolution from a powerful position involved in tax collection and law enforcement to its current, largely ceremonial nature.

Alexander discusses his responsibilities, which include working with the judiciary, prisons, probation services, the voluntary sector, and emergency services. He details the various ceremonial duties such as police awards, fire service graduations, charity visits, and citizenship ceremonies. As a non-political and voluntary role, the High Sheriff covers all expenses, from the uniform to event costs.

We explore the unique appointment process, involving selection by a panel, approval by the Privy Council, and a formal ceremony with the King. Alexander also shares his personal journey, from his voluntary work that led to his selection, to his focus during his tenure on supporting children in the care system and those leaving it.
