In the series premiere, Dr. J.D. Hyman provides an overview of the social and cultural mores that have created an institutional disadvantage for minorities in America. He also dives into how the disparities in the justice system foster violence against people of color and how George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were some of the more recent victims of those disparities.

In the second chapter of the story, Dr. Hyman explores what it means and feels to be black in America. JD challenges listeners to move past pain and anger in an effort to change the narrative of the country. JD explores the relationship between Black America and law enforcement and how basic accountability can solve many of the problems that exist within our law enforcement. In the fourth chapter of the story, Dr. Hyman meets with Andrew Williams III, author of the article "Facing My Own Blackness." In the article, Andrew tells the story of how he reconciled the meaning and weight of his race and what it means to face the world––in a world where his race is often vilified. JD explores these mores with Andrew and reconciles his own race and how he came to terms with that same world.

Attending a rural, predominantly white institution, JD and Donald reflect on college life and campus racial tensions during the 2008 presidential race and subsequent election.
