This episode shares part one of the Herbalism and Border Violence workshop.

This is the audio version of a workshop that was originally an offering with the Railyard Apothecary in November 2024.

It explores the role of herbalism in supporting refugees, asylum seekers and people on the move across repressive borders. It explores the politics of the border regime and the role of herbalists in supporting people displaced by colonialism, capitalism, conflict and climate change.

The workshop introduces the work of the Mobile Herbal Clinic Calais that has served over 10,000 refugees in Northern France with first aid and acute herbal care since 2019. Nicole also talks about herbal solidarity on the Poland-Ukraine border and lessons from other herbal refugee solidarity work. People will take away practical information about several of the medicines made en masse and learn what herbal medicine can look like in these challenging conditions.

Organising with others for human, animal and earth liberation can be one of the most empowering experiences alive. Yet frontline resistance comes with risks to our physical and emotional health that can lead many people to burn out and abandon social movements altogether.

This book is about overcoming burnout, linking the author’s journey of recovery with wider systemic forces such as classism, sexism and power dynamics in groups, poverty, chronic illness and ableism, as well as grief and trauma from prison and state repression. It is a call for models of mutual aid and collective care. Simultaneously deeply personal and acutely political, for anyone involved in grassroots organising, it is a must read.

Tina (she/her) is a single mum whose son has been in prison the last 18 months. Since he’s been inside his self-harm has worsened to the point of repeated suicide attempts. Tina is nervously exhausted from phone calls and prison visits. Her arthritis has flared up so badly that she is now using a walking stick on very bad days. She has body pain all over and isn’t refreshed by sleep. She feels tense and unable to relax on a daily basis because she is so worried about her son. She takes Ibuprofen and Paracetamol regularly but no other medication. She is in early menopause and sleep is affected by night sweats. She has lost her appetite.
