The Faros - Les Miserables 3 - Jean ValJean Part 1

  • Summary

  • Join Andrew Williams as he reflects on Victor Hugo’s classic story, Les Miserables.

Episode 3: Jean ValJean Part 1 - "To Love Another Person is to See the Face of God"
The third part of this series on Victor Hugo’s - Les Miserables - this extraordinary tale that speaks of our homesickness for God and our ache for mercy and restoration.

But Hugo is not a theologian. In his own words “He did not study God; he was dazzled by Him.” In fact, he is first a poet and then a novelist, so the book is full of symbolism and allusion and like any good poem – something catches our heart’s eye, and we are invited to dig out its meaning.

One of these jewels, poignantly held out for us at the end of the musical – is Hugo’s conclusion, “To love another person is to see the face of God.”  Hugo has gone directly to Genesis 33:10, where, full of love for his brother, Jacob says to Esau, “For to see your face is like seeing the face of God.”
