At the age of 24, Dr. Kellogg took over as director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, also known as "The San." In his quest to provide his famous guests with top-notch care, Dr. Kellogg pushed dangerous treatments that put many of his patients in the ground, rather than on the road to wellness.

When Dr. Kellogg stole the Battle Creek Sanitarium out from under Mother White and the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the scorned prophet swore there would be hell to pay. Soon after, hell on earth visited Battle Creek in the form of a series of suspicious fires known as "The West End Fires."
