Assembled kings were furious. They felt that they had been insulted by Drupad who had invited them, extended all courtesies and then was giving away his extraordinary daughter to a Brahmin. They felt that a swayamvar was only for Kshatriyas and a Brahmin had no business participating in it. Nevertheless, they did not want to kill the Brahmin. Their anger was directed at King Drupad and they moved forward to attack him. Drupad rushed and took shelter with the Brahmins. Bheem and Arjun immediately took positions to defend Drupad. Bheem uprooted a large tree and stood with the tree as a weapon. Karn fought with Arjun, but retreated after a fierce battle. Shaly fought with Bheem who threw him on the ground but did not kill him. Seeing the defeat of two mighty kings, other kings lost the will to fight.
