  • Episode 9: Your Key Intention as a Coach (Ep. 9)
    Sep 28 2021
For the first episode of Season Two we're revisiting a topic that we discussed in Episode 3: Your Key Intention as a Coach. In this episode April and Nadia each share what their key intention is and why it is the most important. For April, this intention helps her to communicate better with the group of people that she is working with, and helps her better understand if learning is taking place. For Nadia, her key intention is so important, that she shares that intention with the athletes that she is working with, so that they know it is important to her. Join us for this episode, and then afterward take some time to sit down and establish what your key intention is as a coach. Knowing this information and having it as the cornerstone of your coaching program will help you make sure that you're sticking to your key purpose as a coach.

  • Episode 8: Introducing our New Co-host April Fournier (Ep. 8)
    Sep 21 2021
In today's episode we're excited to announce that April Fournier will be joining Nadia Kean as the co-host of the Strong Athletic Podcast.  Our listeners were first introduced to April in Episode 7 in which she spoke to us about the negative impact of having team names that are raciest and hurtful and why the practice needs to change.  April is many things, including an athlete, a parent, a wife, an Early Childhood Educator and an Indigenous Rights Activist. At the time of the release of this episode, April is also running for City Council of Portland, Maine.  In this episode, which was recorded in July of 2020, Nadia and April talk about different factors that they find important within sports and athletics. They talk about interests that they share in regard to communication between coaches and athletes and factors that will impact a person's experience in sports. This episode is a good prelude for what's to come during Season Two of the Strong Athletic Podcast.

  • Not Your Mascot: Why Native Mascots Are Harmful (Ep. 7)
    Jul 18 2020
In today’s episode we chat with April Fournier, who is an Early Childhood Educator and an Indigenous rights Activist. April discusses team names and mascots, specifically names and mascots that are racist and that objectify a group of people, in this case Indigenous People. April talks to us about the Washington NFL team that needs to change its name, the negative impact of having team names that are raciest and hurtful and why this practice needs to change. April gives recommendations on how you can start to pay more attention and get involved in helping meaningful change happen. April and Nadia do some role playing on how you can bring up these topics on your team if your name or mascot are problematic. April also talks about making mistakes and how you move forward from something that you’ve done to a group of people, a teammate or a coach that is hurtful. • Learning is Consensual (Ep. 6)
    Nov 13 2019
In this episode we discuss three concepts for coaches to keep in mind when they coach. We remind people that sometimes learning is taking place, even if we're not aware of it. We speak about the fact that coaches shouldn't assume that athletes want coaching. We also remind coaches that they shouldn't try to read athletes' faces and body langue too much, because it can lead to false assumptions. We give a shout out to the Rule Fifty Six upcoming Derby Stance Coaching Summit. We also talk about the beauty and power of sport. Get in touch! • What Does it Mean to be Athletic? (Ep. 5)
    Oct 21 2019
Have you put much thought into the words athlete, athletic and nonathletic? Given that the name of our podcast contains the word Athletic we have put a lot of thought into what it means to be an athlete. Something that stands out to Strong Athletic host Nadia Kean is that many people do not feel qualified to use the word athlete or athletic. In this episode we look at how the words are used, and what they actually mean. We discuss the words from both the perspective of a coach and an athlete. This is an especially good episode to listen to if you've always felt excluded from using the word athlete and you want to hear someone else's perspective on why you don't need anyone's permission to use the word athlete or athletic. • Your Core Values as an Athlete (Ep. 4)
    Mar 14 2019
Have you ever thought about your Core Values as an Athlete? If not, we're going to focus on them in today's episode of the Strong Athletic Podcast. Core Values are your key beliefs in sports. Sometimes we're just playing sports and we don't really know why we're there, why we stay, or why we would leave. As athletes it's important for us to know this information, because it can be our "go to" when times get hard. • A little Talking Goes a Long Way (Ep. 2)
    Feb 18 2019
We focus on how communication can lead to positive changes for both coaches and athletes. In this episode we discuss questions 11-14 from "The List" that was introduced in Episode 1. These questions have to do with being on a team, having teammates and also having coaches. We discuss why athletes need to pay attention to their own performance and not judge their teammates. We discuss Invisible Illnesses that impact athletes. We cover an issue that was impacting an athlete's performance during practice, yet their coach and teammates were unaware of it and so they didn't get the support they needed at first. This is an issue that Strong Athletic is interested in. Many people in the Strong Athletic Community have an Invisible Illness and that is why we created the Strong Athletic Chronically Ill shirt, after Ashley, aka Killa, from Windy City Rollers made the request. We touch on "body bias" in sports and how society wants us to believe that there is a certain "athletic body" and otherwise if you don't have it, you shouldn't use the term "athlete". Strong Athletic STRONGLY DISAGREES with this sentiment. We're going to do a podcast on this in the future and if you'd like to contribute in any way we want to hear from you.
