Six Notes of Separation

By: Helena Fremantle
  • Summary

  • It started off from looking up song credits, then it became a close following of the links between musicians. Now, Six Notes of Separation has become Helena's space to fully explore the connections that underpin the music industry. From producers in common to subliminal lyrical references, it's safe to say that the world of music is one closely woven web. Every episode done on exploring an artist, must be linked to the previous episode/artist in some way- a challenge which listeners can take part in as they try and guess the connection. New episodes drop every other Saturday.

At 13 he joined a school band, by 24 he'd had a number one UK album and had sold out 3 nights at Brixton Academy. With lyrics and music gaining the attention of the Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello Awards, it's safe to say The 1975 have become one of the most successful modern-day bands. But with Healy as the frontman, the band has been subject to a lot of heat and a lot of scandal.

From Nazism, to misogyny, to racism and to relationships, this is the story of Matty Healy. To find out how The 1975 star is connected to last episode's Charli XCX, make sure to give this episode a listen and watch out for the next episode where I'll be exploring a brand new artist. What do you think will be the link between them and Healy?

It's safe to say that 'Brat' was the soundbite of this summer- things that were once trashy became 'brat', things that seemed ordinary, were now 'brat', and god forbid if you saw anything green because it would, more than definitely, be BRAT. And who do we have to thank for this 'bratification' of pop culture? Charli XCX.

In this episode of Six Notes of Separation, I'll be taking you to the start of Charli's career before we knew her as the PARTYGIRL she now is. I'll explore why her latest album 'Brat' has transcended the boundaries of music and infiltrated our culture in such an intense way and as for the rules of the pod, I'll be exploring the link between Charli and last episode's 'Ice Spice'. Who do you think will be the focus of next episode and what will be their link to Charli?

Isis Gaston, the 4x Grammy nominated 'Ice Spice', began making music in 2021 after dropping out of uni. By 2022, she had blown up on social media who coined her as the 'rap princess', following in the footsteps of her biggest inspiration and the 'queen of rap', Nicki Minaj. By 2023, Minaj had hopped on a remix for one of Ice's songs and that same summer, they collaborated together on the massive hit from the Barbie movie soundtrack 'Barbie World'. Whilst it's safe to say Ice's rise to fame has been one of speed and success, it's no secret that she finds herself attracting drama with just as much pace. With her 2024 shaping up to look like one of unsteadiness, I'll be explaining what it is that's triggered Gaston's success to fall into a career of conflicting public opinion.

In this episode of Six Notes of Separation, I'll explain how last episode's, Travis Scott, is connected to Ice Spice- next episode there'll be a new artist with a new link. What do you think will connect them to Ice Spice?
