Three are 3 klipot that separates a person from G-d. The first attacks him in the head. The second gets him in the heart. And the third which is the worst of all. It seeks to winnow its way into a persons' being, to demoralize him and throw him into full-fledged retreat. (Likutey Halakhot Shabbat 6:12).

Rebbe Nachman explained that a fast has the power to transform spiritual darkness into light. By fasting, we loosen the hold that the body has over us and allow the soul to shine more brightly.
