Respectful Relationship Podcast

By: Caroline Speakman and Gina Harimis
  • Summary

  • Welcome to the Respectful Relationships Podcast. Caroline and Gina bring you the conversations that clarify consent, define sexual assault and discuss the issues our teenagers want to know about. They are speaking to our young people and sharing the perspectives of what a Respectful Relationship looks and feels like and how to identify a disrespectful relationship. This is a series that dives deep in the experiences of those who have bravely come forward with their story, so other people don’t feel alone and know there are people who care and can help. You’ll hear from school teachers, sports people, former Kambala student Chanel Contos, Callum from Top Blokes, Caroline’s son, Matthew and two young people who navigate respectful relationships in their parents’ business. There is so much packed into these conversations but they are just the conversation starter. Follow @respectfulrelationships on instagram for behind the scenes updates.

  • Top Blokes, Nice Guys and the Womaniser. The Truth About Traditional Men and Emotions.
    Mar 31 2022

Callum is a youth worker from Top Blokes Foundation. He has extensive experience working with at-risk and disadvantaged you aged 10-16 as well as people with disabilities of all ages. His role focuses on changing behaviour in young men through daily connection, mentoring and building a community of support.

Callum shares how ‘masculinity’ is a combination of influencing factors and life experiences such as role models and trauma. He teaches useful strategies to young men, their teachers and parents so they can speak to and support them.

The Top Bloke Program is helping young men connect to themselves and find connection to who they are in the world.

The traditional notion of being a man has been to not show emotions, be a womaniser and get angry and into fights to get what you want. Callum explains how this behaviour instills fear in the young women they are ultimately attempting to attract and often leads to life changing consequences in the workforce and relationships.

  • Consent is a Conversation
    Mar 31 2022

Chanel joined Caroline and Gina to discuss the education, training and prosecution options for what has been coined ‘entitled opportunists’. Chanel makes it easy to understand the need for training in consent and sexual assault at schools as she also shares her experience along with thousands of others who have shared their experience on the online movement she created to provide the evidence for change in legislation and education. She said there also needed to be more alternatives to jail for perpetrators because it sometimes acted as a disincentive to victims coming forward.
