Using first-person narration, the reader is left off-balance throughout—mainly because we only know the narrator’s gender. The story “contains no descriptions of his physical features, his age, or where he is traveling from. Apart from his boyhood friendship, his history is unknown.” Poe’s intent is masterfully accomplished—the reader, whether they realize it or not, takes the role of the narrator and experiences the story both in the first-person and the third person. And make no mistake, this story is guaranteed to keep you up at night! So, sit back, pull up the covers, and pay close attention as I read The Fall of the House of Usher.
