Quran Explained. 3 - Chapter 2 The Cow (Surah Al-Baqarah), Verses 75-141

  • Summary

  • Chapter 2 The Cow (Surah Al-Baqarah) was revealed over two years in Madinah after the migration of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in 622 CE (Common Era).

    Main points of this Chapter:

    • Allah gave some prophets more blessings than others, such as raising the status of some above others. These blessings were given to test and try people in their faith (verse 253).
    • “There is no compulsion in religion. Guidance is clearly distinct from error. Whoever rejects false gods and believes solely in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold, which willnever break. Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing” (256).
    • The Quran confirms the message brought by all the prophets, including those that are not specifically mentioned in the Quran (verse 285).
    • Believers are required to have faith in all the prophets and not differentiate between them (verse 285).
    • The believers are encouraged to spend in the way of Allah and be charitable (verse 254).
    • The believers are reminded that they will face tests and trials in their lives, but those who remain steadfast will receive Allah's reward (verses 155-157).
    • Human nature: The Quran describes the nature of human beings, their inherent weakness and susceptibility to temptation, and the importance of seeking forgiveness and guidance from Allah.
    • The section also mentions the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael) and the building of the Kaaba in Makkah as a place of worship for Allah (verses 125-129).
    • The believers are instructed to face towards the Kaaba during their prayers, as a symbol of their unity in faith (verse 144).
    • The section also discusses the issue of fighting in the way of Allah, and the conditions and restrictions that apply to such fighting (verses 190-194).
    • Believers are encouraged to seek forgiveness from Allah and to repent for their sins (verses 222-223).
