  • THE CALL OF CTHULHU, CHAPTER 2, H.P. LOVECRAFT
    Oct 23 2024

Unlock the mysteries of the night with Petra's Dark & Dreamy. Drift into tranquility with our immersive sleep stories, where every episode weaves a spellbinding narrative designed to lull you into a restful slumber. Embrace the enchanting blend of soothing voices and captivating tales, and let your dreams take flight with Petra's Dark and Dreamy. Sweet dreams await!

Fans of Lovecraftian lore will enjoy Petra's take on Cthulhu's unique language, taken from clues in the text which combine Greenlandic with middle eastern and Native American linguistic traits. It's a made up language, there is no wrong or right way, the lone exception being the name "Cthulhu" itself:

'In a letter to the amateur writer Duane W. Rimel, dated July 23, 1934, H.P. Lovecraft addresses the issue of how to pronounce the name "Cthulhu."

    H.P. Lovecraftwrote:

The name of the hellish entity was invented by beings whose vocal organs were not like man's, hence it has no relation to the human speech equipment. The syllables were determined by a physiological equipment wholly unlike ours, hence could never be uttered perfectly by human throats ... The actual sound -- as nearly as any human organs could imitate it or human letters record it -- may be taken as something like Khlûl'-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness.'

  • THE BELLS, EDGAR ALLAN POE, (w/ bells sound effects)
    Sep 8 2024

Drift off to the soothing sounds of the bells as described in this rhythmic poem from perhaps one of our first "rappers," Edgar Allan Poe. (see Episode outtakes for details, available to subscribers).

Each ambient episode is designed without music or jarring sound effects in order to flow into the next episode without disrupting your peaceful slumber.

    Episode Note:
I’m pretty sure when any one of us first glances upon The Bells, our hearts are struck with fear at the repetitive nature.

i am not a literary scholar, I am simply a person who loves dark poetry with a voice people say they like to listen to.

But I am a musician, and this poem emanates rhythmic challenges I am happy to accept. Akin to rap, one might say… who knew EAP was a rapper back in the 19th century?

In typical EAP fashion, this poem begins happily and ends on a dark note.

Love it or hate it, this was a fun challenge. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and you can send me a message if you'd like to share them!

A version of The Bells without the sound effects will be available for subscribers, as well as humorous outtakes of the first attempts to find some rhythm in the stanzas where it seems not to exist. (Not sure I ever did find it...)
