  • Summary

  • This week we visit Top Ryde Shopping Centre playground (Playzone) in Top Ryde NSW and examine public relations in the playground.     We discuss the micro management of children’s emotions and social interactions, in the playground, by their parents and why they feel the need to manage their child’s public relations.   We consider why parents focus a lot on how their child will appear to others and why their “brand” is more important than child led emotional & social development.    We look at the impact this has on children’s ability to self regulate and further understand more complex emotions such as embarrassment, guilt, shame and frustration.    We also look at the impact this kind of parenting has on the parents themselves, increasing levels of dissatisfaction and resentment in their parenting journey.   We ask, why are we holding our children to a higher standard, than ourselves, when it comes to emotional maturity?
