  • How to manage employee wellbeing in the hybrid workplace
    Jan 23 2023

A surprising benefit of the pandemic for many people was the ability to spend more time at home. Instead of getting up early for the daily commute, people could enjoy an extra hour in bed and spend time with their families. Following the return to the office, many businesses have opted for a hybrid working model, allowing employees to retain these benefits.

For many, though, there is a downside to hybrid working. Feeling overwhelmed by tasks, lack of contact with team members, and difficulties in separating work and home life have created new wellbeing issues. So, how can we address these? We get the expert thoughts of Arti Kashyap Aynsley, global head of wellbeing & inclusion at Ocado, and Jacqui Summons, chief people officer at EMIS Health.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • What efforts can be made to encourage communication between staff at home and those working in the office? What are the implications of this for inclusion and diversity and how can technology help?
    • What channels exist for employees to voice their concerns and preferences surrounding hybrid working and why is it so important to take a collaborative approach?
    • How can line managers co-create ‘good’ jobs so that they balance the wellbeing needs of individual team members with the goals of the wider business?
    • What socialisation opportunities exist for remote workers and how can they be brought into the culture of the organisation?

  • How to support employees' financial wellbeing – the dos and don’ts
    Oct 13 2022

The cost of living crisis in the UK is spiralling and the hardest hit are the poorest in society. As inflation increases faster than the minimum wage, there are many people choosing between whether to ‘eat or heat’.

The temptation of short-term loans and other desperate efforts to avoid poverty often leads to further debt. Award-winning psychologist and bestselling HR author Gethin Nadin, who is chief innovation officer at Zellis, and Jamie Broadley, group head of health & wellbeing at Serco, tell us why employers have a moral obligation to identify employees who may be living on the breadline and find ways to help them recover.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • What can businesses do to ease employee stress during the current cost of living crisis?
    • How can an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) benefit your staff and improve retention, new recruitment and prevent absence from work?
    • How can you identify an employee who is struggling financially and how can putting a financial health policy in place help?
    • What are the key benefits that can help people who are struggling to make ends meet?
    • How can targeted L&D programmes, offering better flexible working arrangements and paying the Living Wage help employees living in poverty?

  • Why investing in mental health matters
    Sep 29 2022

Work can have a huge impact on employees’ wellbeing. Government studies show there has been a deterioration in mental health following each lockdown, and has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The pandemic left many people feeling vulnerable, alone, and without their usual methods of coping, which led many people to quit their jobs in large numbers.

A silver lining is that this situation has provided a perfect opportunity to redefine employee/employer relations and to prioritise the human factor of the workforce. We speak to Jacqui Summons, chief people officer at EMIS Health, and Peter Kelly, a senior psychologist at the Health and Safety Executive, about why it is crucial to focus on employee wellbeing to avoid

the risk of even more resignations in future.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • What can employers do to recognise the early signs of burnout and what effective methods can be put in place to relieve this?
    • How can you invest in your staff’s wellbeing in a meaningful and uplifting way?
    • What support networks are available to staff in need of mental health support?
    • Are employees actively encouraged to take time off to support their mental health needs?
    • How can providing good mental health improve staff retention?

  • How can organisations navigate the huge wellbeing market?
    Sep 15 2022

In our third episode we ask two wellbeing leaders how to separate the wheat from the chaff in the crowded marketplace of wellbeing apps and tools.

There are thousands of wellbeing tools out there. Which is good, right? Not long ago it was a very niche market, but now it is thriving. But there is a drawback: the volume of choice makes it hard to choose a product and know whether it can be effectively applied in your organisation.

Almost a million digital health apps were released as the pandemic took hold in 2020. The total figure now sits at more than 350,000, according to IQVIA, many of which are focused on wellbeing and mental health. To find out where to start, and how to make the choice, we invited two award-winning experts to guide us: wellbeing and mental health consultant and strategist Amy McKeown, and bestselling HR author Gethin Nadin, who is chief innovation officer at Zellis.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • What can organisations do to ensure they choose the most effective benefits for their employees?
    • Tech development can outpace science – so how can organisations get evidence of efficacy? Are some apps overplaying their effectiveness?
    • How can organisations prioritise the kind of conditions and problems that their employees need help with? How useful are employee surveys?

  • How to make your employees feel valued
    Sep 1 2022

Our second episode in the series Wellbeing in the workplace of now covers How to make your employees feel valued.

Recognising the contribution that employees make to your organisation is very important. It is also equally important to approach this in a way that makes them feel valued. Research from Harvard Business Review found that managers often appreciate the work their employees do, but employees were less likely to feel appreciated without meaningful or direct feedback.

General recognition of everyone’s hard work may seem to be an easy way to cover all bases, but this can lead to employees feeling that praise is disingenuous and create feelings of demotivation. So how do you get the balance right? We asked Josephina Smith, director level thought leader on reward, and Caroline Drake, chief people officer at Zellis, to give us their expert advice.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • What plans exist to recognise employee skills and address their opportunities to grow and develop?
    • What benefits do employees gain from coming into the workplace and do staff that work predominantly from home receive any comparable feedback or praise?
    • How do organisations create a culture where people feel valued and appreciated for what they do?
    • What role do managers play in delivering on workers feeling valued?

  • Are organisations doing enough to support employees’ financial resilience?
    Aug 17 2022

Our first episode in the series Wellness in the workplace of now asks - Are organisations doing enough to support employees’ financial resilience?

One in four employees say that money worries affect their ability to do their job. People are the most vital resource in any business, but employees are struggling with the cost of living crisis. One of the likely fallouts from this is that employers will begin to see a decline in productivity, a demotivated workforce, and potentially even resignations.

In this podcast, we speak to Charles Cotton, senior adviser for performance and reward at CIPD, and award-winning psychologist and bestselling HR author Gethin Nadin, who is chief innovation officer at Zellis. We hear from Charles and Gethin that companies need to act now to help employees understand their finances and to build financial resilience.

Other discussion points in the podcast include:

    • Why is financial education so important to employee wellbeing?
    • How can low numeracy skills be a hidden barrier to positive financial wellbeing?
    • What can employers do to help their employees better understand their finances?
    • What people practices, beyond financial education, can employers implement to support employees’ financial wellbeing in a holistic way?
