The rise of Vijayanagar following closely on the decadence of the empire of the Hoysalas was an important landmark in the political and cultural evolution of Karnataka, particularly the central and southern parts of what at present constitutes the district of Mysore. With the arrival of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore, it experienced a renaissance in art, music, and literature, which greatly influenced the region's cultural identity. The episode talks about the political background and geography of Mysore in the 14th century and the rise of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire in the South of India. 

This history of Mysore, based on the latest epigraphical, literary, and historical research, owes its inspiration to His Highness Sri Krishnarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur of revered memory. His interest in promoting proper historical research in the state is well known. His Highness instinctively believed that research flourishes most when left unhampered but properly provided for.
