    Nov 2 2024

Help them! Help them! They're still podcasting!

This week, Cody and Matt enter the Midnight Realm and go toe-to-toe with Mr. Melancholy over the latest feature film from director Jane Shoenbrun. They discuss the relationship between nostalgia and media, the dizzying perspective of alternate realities, and the benefit of queer and trans voices in the horror medium. The boys also spar over stylistic direction while trying to figure out which one of them is Marco and which is Polo.

Don't sit too close to the screen, you'll mess up your eyes!

  • Ep. 129: Night of the Demons (1988)
    Oct 26 2024

    "Happy Halloween, dear..."

It's part two of the Night Howls annual Howl-o-ween Double Feature and these films are bringing double the night, double the demons, and double the howls. This week, Matt and Cody cover a staple of the 80's video nasties with Angela, Suzanne, and other character names the boys still can't get right. They talk all about the Goth Glam of Angela and the lack thereof for the other characters. But it's not all bad, they have a lot to say about grosteque monster effects, deadly places to boink, next-level spooky atmosphere, homages to other classics, and one of the most shocking last-minute Fred Gwynne wins ever covered.

Give us a hand or at least an ear. It's time to celebrate the most wonderful time of year!

  • Ep. 128: Night of the Demon (1957)
    Oct 26 2024

Curses! It's Halloween and you've got an appointment... with a Demon!

This week, Cody and Matt place a hex on each other with a double feature straight from Hell. First, they discuss the mystery of Stonehenge, the danger of downed telephone lines, and proper airplane etiquette. They also mull over the fears of children and the influence mysticism has on the horror genre. If that isn't enough for you, they've got a cult leader with suspiciously textured facial hair to discuss named Karswell... or Carsdale... or Karnsdale...

What? Were you looking for a Halloween miracle? They still can't remember anyone's name.

    Oct 19 2024

    Here, killer killer!

This week, Matt and Cody have one of their loudest discussions about one of the quietest movies they've ever covered. The boys talk all about the home invasion sub-genre, the power couple that is Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel, and how to make a simple story feel complex. Not to mention: bitchy cats, burglar tats, and questionable strat...egies. Plus! Stay tuned for the latter half to hear the special Beyond Fest Q+A for all of the fun behind the scenes you could want.

    You better watch out...

Toss out those jack-o'-lanterns and slam the door on those trick or treaters because we're about to have a bloody good Christmas. This week, Cody and Matt check their stockings and discuss ferocious filmmaking ,narrative nuances, and grotesque gore. As expected, the boys go all out on Art the Clown while discussing physical bits, comic timing, and how David Howard Thornton has earned his place in horror history.

With Art, every list is a naughty list... and you're on it!

  • Ep. 125: The People Under the Stairs (1991)
    Oct 5 2024

    BURN IN HELL!

This week, Matt and Cody are certainly the secretaries of something as they deep-dive into this Wes Craven cult classic, while also celebrating the birthdays of Fool, Wendy Robie, and one of the top two hosts of this program. The boys talk about the social and political ramifications of the film...just kidding...you know they have a field day with odd make-up choices, precarious tarot illustrations, fairy-tale parallels, doors in other doors, viciously adorable pups, one of the iconic mothers of horror, and why exactly are the people under there anyway...Not to mention: a fun recent celebrity run-in they had this spooky season.

This one's sure to scare your hair white so turn the tv towards the crack and guard your doubloons!

Bughuul! Bughuul! Bughuul! Wait... wrong trickster demon.

This week, Cody and Matt fire up the old Super 8 projector and screen what just might be the "scariest movie of all time!" Between reels, the boys discuss troubled writers, effective jump scares, and this film's greater context in the horror landscape of the 2010's. They also buddy up with Sheriff Grizzled, Deputy So-and-So, and Professor Skype. Trust them, it'll make sense by the end of the episode.

Break out the eyeliner and put on your finest coat and tails for this certified horror hit!

    Sep 21 2024

    MILK!

This week, Matt and Cody are Back! Back! We're Sorry! The boys talk about their Summer apart and are taking this week's pick all the way to the bank...head. They discuss the life and legacy of the iconic Tallulah Bankhead and the "old biddy" subgenre while also having a hay..hair?...day with scene-chewing performances, hilarious European driving techniques, pro-wrestling maids, incredibly sexy portraiture, and boggy blue boys left below. Not to mention, they are joined by this week's listener recommender and mutual long-time friend, Terrie Miller, to get her take on what gave this film it's lasting impact.

They're drowning in Bankhead impressions over here so unless you want to end up soggy in a basement, turn this car around while you still have a chance!
