  • Episode 39- Ghoulish Gloucestershire
    Mar 27 2026

On this episode, we’ll look at some of the more ghoulish happenings in Gloucestershire. The word ghoul- comes from ancient Arabic folklore, a desert demon said to lurk in graveyards, that robbed fresh graves, and devoured the dead. These were shape-shifting monsters that lured travellers to their doom. When the word crossed into English in the 18th century, “ghoul” kept its graveyard associations, and by the 19th century “ghoulish” emerged as the perfect adjective for anything that revels in the macabre: a fascination with death, disaster, or the grotesque.

Listen and watch as we step into the shadows of 2 unsettling tales, both of which, refuse to be left in the past. A cursed lead tablet found in a house but written before the house was even built and then to a named grave at a crossroads. It may be named but no one knows just who, or what, is buried there. Tales of witchcraft and a curse, all here in this episode I’ve called GhoulishGloucestershire.

Bath was founded by the Romans around 60 AD and as you can imagine, the city has a deep and rich history and also of the people who madethis city their home. So, who was this ghostly figure in the widebrimmed hat? Here are some witness reports, from the book of Local Ghosts by Margaret Royal and Ian Girvan.

The Grey Ladies of Somerset - Episode 37

There have been many reports of apparitions of women dressed in grey who haunt historicsites like castles, mansions, or battlefields. These ghosts are often described as melancholic, ethereal figures associated with tragedy, heartbreak, or untimely death.

The concept of Grey Ladies likely stems from medieval Christian beliefs, where the greyattire symbolized souls in purgatory— a state of limbo for the deceased who are neither fully redeemed nor damned, allowing them to appear in the living world as mysterious, permeable entities seeking resolution.

Come with me to the beautiful country of Somerset here in England and I’ll share 3 experiences of the Grey Ladies that have been seen there……
