    Whispering Pines

If you find me in a gloom,

or catch me in a dream

    Inside my lonely room,

    there is no in between

    Whispering Pines,

    rising of the tide

    If only one star shines

    That's just enough

    to get inside

    I will wait until it

    all goes 'round

    With you in sight,

    the lost are found

    Foghorn through the night,

    calling out to sea

    Protect my only light,

for she once belonged to me

    Let the waves rush in,

    let the seagulls cry

    For if I live again,

    these hopes will never die

I can feel you standing there

But I don't see you anywhere

    Standing by the well,

    wishing for the rains

    Reaching to the clouds,

    for nothing else remains

    Drifting in a daze,

    when evening will be done

    Try looking through a haze

    At an empty house,

    in the cold, cold sun

I will wait until it all goes 'round

With you in sight, the lost are found.

    Genbaboom

My generation, born of the greatest,

coming of age to a dark bells toll.

Idealism, a flower in a gun barrel,

    entrusted with the national soul.

My generation deployed to rock and roll

and fought in a jungle at seventeen.

And when it was over, returned to a country

had no idea of what we had seen.

My generation watched as a president

betrayed the trust and was held to account.

We saw the same thing, the truth was apparent.

There's no other way, the leader was out.

My generation settled into easy living.

Got older and so far from our youth.

Once had a hunger, now got whatever.

We search for the remote, not for the truth.

My generation split like a tree trunk,

bought into charlatans hate filled lies.

Soon it was brother turned against brother.

    Common ground lost, goodwill died.

My generation now sickened and sun-blind,

once entrusted with the national soul,

will pass on the flame, turn over the keys,

and fade away, disgraced and old.

    Fade away, disgraced and old.

    Fade away, disgraced and old.

  • Monkey and the Button
    Nov 10 2022

    Monkey and the Button

    Featuring Natalia Schuurman

    Refrain:

    There’s this monkey,

    he had a Button,

    and he did

    just what he wants.

    Now this monkey

    is no more now

    for his weakness

    and arrogance.

    Refrain

In the night, the Voice of the Jungle came to the first monkey:

“Monkey, here is the Key of Knowledge. Use it wisely.”

He awoke, and there was the Button.

The monkey learned it was no ordinary button.

The monkey could get this Button to do anything he wanted.

All he had to do was to make a wish,

press the Button and the wish was his.

So, the monkey ate the finest bananas of the jungle.

He swung from the longest, strongest vines.

He jumped with no fear of falling.

And when he was angry, the jungle creatures fled,

    for they feared his Button.

    There’s this monkey

    he had a Button,

    and he did

    just what he wants.

All day long the monkey sat in his tree, pushing his Button.

    After time, the monkey changed.

It did not matter to him that the other jungle creatures suffered.

He did not listen as they asked for his help.

He didn’t think of using his Button for anyone but himself.

    Refrain

    About at the same time,

the Voice came to the second monkey,

with him awakened to a button as well.

And then one day, the two monkeys crossed paths at the river.

They both insisted they had discovered the river first.

    A terrible quarrel took place!

    Both monkeys hissed and spat

and threw great handfuls of leaves and dust.

They fought and screamed and slapped.

Then each paused and remembered his Button.

At pretty much the same time, they pushed their Buttons.

    Instantly both monkeys vanished.

    There’s this monkey,

    he had a Button.

Oh monkey, monkey! You never had a chance.

    Now this monkey,

    he had a Button…

    Never had a chance.

  • Homeward
    Nov 10 2022

    Homeward

Is there a chance that we have finally

    managed to find our way?

Is there a chance that we could be home

    when night-time turns into day?

The tired, weary, heartbroken and ragged,

    believing the moment is soon.

Wasn’t that a landmark we recognized

’neath the light of a brilliant moon?

Oh to be home! Oh to be home!

We’re tired, weary, heartbroken and ragged.

    Oh, to be home!

Can we believe what our eyes have seen,

when we thought we’ve seen this before?

Can we believe what our hearts now say,

this is what we’ve been waiting for?

The exiled, lost, abandoned and wandering,

for so long and so very far,

now raise there heads with eyes that shine

‘neath a field of a billion stars!

Oh to be home! Oh to be home!

    Exiled, lost, abandoned and wandering.

    Oh, to be home!

If we allow this hope to take root

and in our hearts silently pray,

Could it vanish like vapor or mist?

    Will it be taken away?

The lonely, abused, threadbare and shunned

stand in the new morning light,

dis-believing eyes open wide in the

    passing dark of the night!

Oh to be home! Oh to be home!

    Lonely, abused, threadbare and shunned.

    Oh, to be home!

  • Two Brothers
    Nov 10 2022

    Two Brothers

First brother set the house on fire,

    licking flames dancing higher.

    Second brother rose to run

when he seen what he had done.

    But he stood there transfixed

at what he had just witnessed.

Sparks swirled and scattered round them,

thinking ‘bout the blood that bound them.

    Second brother then heard

    First brother say these words:

    “Now the reason you’ll learn,

did it just to see it burn.”

    Second brother brushed the ashes

Shook his coat and wiped his glasses

Took a bottle, poured a drink.

Said “I need some time to think.”

First brother sat next to the other.

They had a drink and then another.

By night’s end with the rising sun,

they both knew what had to be done.

Out they stepped into the morning

And without a word of warning

    Second brother took his turn,

He lit a house, they watched it burn.

  • See Through Me
    Nov 10 2022

    See Through Me

You can see through me now,

    I’m a cold heart, a callous soul.

You can see through me now,

I’m telling you it’s time to go.

And I’m calling you, I’m not alone.

Trying to carve a heart of stone.

You can see through me now,

you can see clear through my eyes.

You can see through me now,

    my deceit and silly lies.

You can see through me now,

I’m a fire that will consume your world.

You can see through me now,

you’re in oblivion, you’re such a stupid girl.

And I’m telling you that the danger’s real.

Ambivalence is all that I can feel.

You can see through me now,

you can see clear through my eyes.

You can see through me now,

through my deceit and silly lies.

You can see through me now,

I’m an animal moving through the night.

You can see through me now,

I could turn on you and take your life.

And I’m howling at the hidden moon,

and the predator will be prowling soon.

You can see through me now,

you can see clear through my eyes.

You can see through me now,

through my deceit and silly lies.

    Recklessly Yours

’Til the spring comes, ’til the rains fall.

’Til the blossoms drop and the birds call.

’Til the ice melts upon the shores,

    I sign this, Recklessly Yours.

’Til the summer’s blaze, ’til the thunder rolls.

’Til a bright June morning as the Sunday bells toll,

’Til the locust’s song’s heard thru porch doors,

    I sign this, Recklessly Yours.

’Til Indian summer dries, ’til the fields go pastel,

’Til the school busses roll again and the burnt leave smell.

’Til spiders and crickets seek shelter indoors,

    I sign this, Recklessly Yours.

’Til the snow blankets white, ’til the trees vein black.

’Til the arctic winds howl and the icycles crack.

’Til the holidays chime and the fire roars,

    I sign this, Recklessly Yours.

  • Jettison
    Nov 10 2022

    Jettison

    Jettison,

    Jettison,

    Jettison.

I must get out from underneath

    the dead weight you’ve become.

    Jettison.

    Jettison,

    Jettison.

“Put some, put some guerrilla action on it.”

A little voice that’s got my ear

says “Time to cut and run.”

    Jettison.

    This ritual of our friendship,

    it’s just a costly drug.

It’s time to break this habit.

It’s time to pull the plug.

    Jettison.

    “Forget religion.”

    Jettison,

    Jettison.

    You mustn’t take this personal

    when what’s done is done.

    Jettison.

This mask that we call honor,

we take what we can get.

It’s time to cut the holiness.

It’s time to cut to it.

    Jettison,

    “It’s the ballot,”

    Jettison.

    “or the bullet.”

Yeah who would blame me walking

from the load that you’ve become?

    Jettison,

    Jettison.
